Well they were more known as a singles band than an albums band however Village Green Preservation Society is a work of genius , and has just been re released as a triple album with loads of extras on it.That should be the first thing you get.

Also try & get hold of The Kink Kontroversy , after those 2 you really only have to bother with the singles.

I really like Something Else by the Kinks.

(and I like basically every song on there, so they don't strike me that much as a singles band)

word. Wonderful lyrics. 'Dedicated Followers of Fashion' and 'Till the End of the Day' are good ones too.

Just listening to Everybody's Gonna Be Happy from the High fidelity soundtrack and it reminded me how damn good the Kinks are but I only a few tracks here and there. I need to rectify this ASAP.

I think Something Else and Village Green are the greatest pop albums ever recorded.

Don't forget 'Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)' - that is a flawless album too featuring my favorite Kinks song 'Victoria'.

My warning would to be wary of their 70's collections. Sure, it includes some radio friendly tunes like Lola & Superman - but it takes a very particular person to appreciate it (I sure can't). Their music ranges from vaudeville to arena rock & is punctuated by Ray Davies completely taking over the band as Dave Davies is sidelined.

Yeah I hadn't heard that when I wrote the original post but i'd include that in the list now after hearing it.
