The Beatles/Stones rivalry in the 60's (similar to the Blur/Oasis thing) put the Kinks in the shade. Consequently they never got the full recognition they deserved at the time.
In my opinion, they match them both in every way and I'd say they were more original than the Stones ever were. Favourite Kinks song - Dead End Street.

Many of The Kinks songs mentioned in this thread do reinforce the fact that they were a very good band of the time, and so good that so many of them can realistically be discribed as timeless classics. Several have been named.
In relation to The Kinks, who reckons the single released by Dave Davies called Death of a Clown is a great song.
I also agree with Right Track that they were overshadowed by The Beatles and The Stones amidst the height of hype between these other great bands.

Ray Davies has influenced so many songwriters today. Particularly Paul Weller. "David Watts" is a great song. The Fall covered "Victoria." Kirstie McCall covered "Days." Apparently, according to Ray Davies autobiography, John Lennon was a real fan of "Wonder boy" and had it played over and over again one night in a nightclub during the sixties, by the DJ.
"See my friends" caused a bit of controversy at the time because it was seen to have homosexual overtones.
And the Davies brothers were fighting each other long before Noel and Liam!

Yes Dezzy, Death Of A Clown is a great song. Easy to forget how young Dave was when they were famous. I think he was only just 17 when they had their first hit...are you asleep yet?

I really like The Kinks, some of their songs are just amazing. Definatly potentional summer songs, do you not argee? And gosh...'Dedicated Follower Of Fasion'... "They seek him here, they seek him there, In regent street and leicester square..." Okay, not one of their best, but c'mon, you have to love the frilly nylon panties?

I always have liked the Kinks, perhaps even more than the Beatles, shame teh whole world forgoets them and focus's on eth beatles or The Stones, they had a string of great songs, waterloo sunset, lola, you really got me etc..They were one of the best bands around yet were overshadowed by bands such as the Beatles and Stones..
