Warren, why are you trying to mess with the natural order that has been carried on for decades and decades.....of kids listening to music their parents don't think is all that great......look at when rockabilly first came out and those wild hip shakes from elvis that needed to be censored... even further back....with the big bands and the zoot suit time period.....their parents couldn't understand why they liked such music......

just give him time....either one of two things will happen.....he will either come to find out that there are better bands/artists and other genres on his own or he will still listen to those same bands along with other genres and his taste will expand

and just look how i turned out :D

SOAD was the **** back then but.....all of that gets boring after awhile and you look for new music.

Exactly, he'll get bored. Let him grow out of it, and hopefully he'll develop a desire to find different music.

my dad was listening to Mussorgsky and reading East European military history when Never Mind the Bollocks came out, and my mum is one of those weird people who never 'did' music... the Moody Blues and Cliff Richard was about as far as she got.
I started working everything out from magazines, and now I hate everyone for not being as cool as me.
Basically if your kid doesn't appreciate having a rock dad then he's clinically thick or just so indoctrinated with post-grunge rubbish that there's no turning back.

Death
Dying Fetus
Amon Amarth
Arch Enemy (old Arch Enemy with Johan, not Angela)
Cannibal Corpse
Necrophagist
Nile
Strapping Young Lad
Kreator
Slayer
Venom
Iron Maiden

I know you said no heavy metal, but alot of these bands are way better and way more versatile than the stuff your kid is listening to. I mean, I like Disturbed, but let's face it, they don't compare to some of the bands. If anything, I highly recommend Death (the band. I don't mean actually killing your kid).

I know, having a Dad with really old tastes in music can be kind of a pain when you're trying to relate to him in that area. My dad's in his 70's and he still thinks Elvis is the greatest guitarist and singer in the world. I'm not denying Elvis's significants in music, but I have to be honest, his stuff puts me to sleep. There's no energy in his material nor in any material of the other artists my Dad has recommended to me.

Rock is going through a time of trial right now, especially with the wave of death and nu metal that everyone is somehow. enjoying
I'm sorry, but I have to say this. How can you loop Death metal and Nu-metal together? Death metal has been around longer than nu-metal has and is alot more innovative and difficult than nu-metal.

Death metal is possibly the least innovative genre of music out there... In most cases.

I, personally, can't stand Disturbed, the vast majority of Trapt, and Linkin Park's new album is probably one of the worst things I've ever heard. SOAD is alright.

How can I make my son stop listening to these bands? Especially Disturbed.

I can't kill him, so I think I need to find something to replace those bands. Something extraordinarily better. I don't know how far I'll get him away from this "pop" radio music style, but I'd like to try. Also, no heavy metal.

It's really annoying to talk to him about music, I really need some help. He's in seventh grade and it's pretty vital to him that the music is "cool" and not "emo".

There's gotta be soemthing out there, right?

Thanks if you try to help.

you're talking about your son, and your location says "with my mom".

anyway. i'd suggest some sting, robbie williams and human league.
