My son listens to disturbed
Okay, my son listens to Disturbed, Trapt, System of a Down, and Linkin Park.
I, personally, can't stand Disturbed, the vast majority of Trapt, and Linkin Park's new album is probably one of the worst things I've ever heard. SOAD is alright. How can I make my son stop listening to these bands? Especially Disturbed. I can't kill him, so I think I need to find something to replace those bands. Something extraordinarily better. I don't know how far I'll get him away from this "pop" radio music style, but I'd like to try. Also, no heavy metal. It's really annoying to talk to him about music, I really need some help. He's in seventh grade and it's pretty vital to him that the music is "cool" and not "emo". There's gotta be soemthing out there, right? Thanks if you try to help. |
Listening to crap music that your parents hate at that age is a part of growing up.
You think I wanted to spend time listening to my dads records at that age? Let his tastes evolve naturally. |

Excellent :banghead:. First tell us how old you are and then we'll get on with the recommendations. |
to Urban Hatemonger, I guess I mainly want to find something we can both listen to since we spend a bit of time together.
and to chiron, well the music recommendations are mostly for my son, in the long run, I don't mind listening to his music, but it would be nice to find something better. I'm 34 though. |
Try telling him something about the background of the music you listen to.
The history of the band members, stuff he can relate to. Anything that will get him indirectly interested in the music. |
though I wouldn't mind him wanting to listen to my music, I'm mainly trying to find him music in his taste. (which I guess in someway is listening to my music, since I'm sort of forcing my preference into it)

Deftones/A Perfect Circle/Faith No More are possible options.

Sometimes all a kid needs is a good beating.

If I allowed my mother to influence my musical tastes while I was young, I would be listening to Cinderella and Ratt nowadays. Ugh.
Try Smashing Pumpkins or Helmet. |
I'd introduce him to the oldies, like Sabbath and Zep.

A few short loud ones for him to enjoy , still quite a hip band and I would think most of their stuff would appeal to you as well. |

zepplin, early u2, neil young, the allmans, roxy music, kraftwork,....... his dad's records may be an improvement |

****, put some CAN on and spark a few with him.
|
Give him some Ramones, tie him up, and lock him your bedroom.

I agree. Smack him in the head with a 2X4 a few times. Maybe he will go deaf and no longer have the ability to listen to shitty music. It could be worse. He could be listening to that soulja boy crap. |
I'm in eighth, and that music might be big on the rock scene, but rock is dying with the new generation...
I listen to Disturbed and SOAD a bit, and I know from experience you could almost definetly get him onto 90's music, especially grunge. Try giving him some Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, or Rage Against the Machine. And just be f*cking grateful he isn't listening to rap and low-riding... |

Rock is going through a time of trial right now, especially with the wave of death and nu metal that everyone is somehow. enjoying EDIT: Half the kids in my school have no clue who Kurt Cobain, Tom Morello, or even Jimi Hendrix are. |
Like kids in the 80's knew who Sinatra was...
|
That wouldn't be too much of a loss if they know of Chuck and Mr. Akerfeldt.
|
My point is you can't expect all kids to like the music their parents listen to.
|
messing with your kid's taste is definitely not the way to go.
hell, soad and disturbed were my favorite bands in 7th grade, and just look how i turned out :D |

Get him into stuff that influenced the bands he's into. It's how my music taste improved. Requires research mind. |

I think eveyone needs to listen to Wu-tang and De La Soul at some point.
|
Warren, why are you trying to mess with the natural order that has been carried on for decades and decades.....of kids listening to music their parents don't think is all that great......look at when rockabilly first came out and those wild hip shakes from elvis that needed to be censored... even further back....with the big bands and the zoot suit time period.....their parents couldn't understand why they liked such music......
just give him time....either one of two things will happen.....he will either come to find out that there are better bands/artists and other genres on his own or he will still listen to those same bands along with other genres and his taste will expand |

my dad was listening to Mussorgsky and reading East European military history when Never Mind the Bollocks came out, and my mum is one of those weird people who never 'did' music... the Moody Blues and Cliff Richard was about as far as she got.
I started working everything out from magazines, and now I hate everyone for not being as cool as me. Basically if your kid doesn't appreciate having a rock dad then he's clinically thick or just so indoctrinated with post-grunge rubbish that there's no turning back. |
Death
Dying Fetus Amon Amarth Arch Enemy (old Arch Enemy with Johan, not Angela) Cannibal Corpse Necrophagist Nile Strapping Young Lad Kreator Slayer Venom Iron Maiden I know you said no heavy metal, but alot of these bands are way better and way more versatile than the stuff your kid is listening to. I mean, I like Disturbed, but let's face it, they don't compare to some of the bands. If anything, I highly recommend Death (the band. I don't mean actually killing your kid). I know, having a Dad with really old tastes in music can be kind of a pain when you're trying to relate to him in that area. My dad's in his 70's and he still thinks Elvis is the greatest guitarist and singer in the world. I'm not denying Elvis's significants in music, but I have to be honest, his stuff puts me to sleep. There's no energy in his material nor in any material of the other artists my Dad has recommended to me. Quote:
