Well, I grew up when Metal was being born.
I was young, but I knew metal all my life and this is what metal was:

1. Strength
2. Mastering your music
3. Mastering your instrument
4. relying on your music, your message, and NOTHING ELSE.
5. Writing for the love of it, not to impress others.

Slipknot doesn't stand for any of these things.

Their lyrics are all the same teen-angst ridden jargon that EVERY OTHER BAND IS PUSHING TO SELL RECORDS. I can't respect a "man" in his 30's who can't get over the problems he had in his teens, it's pretty pitiful.

Their music is the most simple crap I've ever heard.
They don't even make an ATTEMPT to be different, it's the same crap all the time: drop all of your strings and play the hell out of the top 3.

The only one who I can really respect for mastering his instrument is the drummer, he's talented, it's just a shame he had to settle for such a waste of a band.

They also market the HELL out of themselves and rely on gimmicks rather than talent. Just look at all the things they do for attention. It's not even music anymore, it's just a product.

And lastly, they don't write music for the love of it.
They let themselves be run around and managed by the same people they claim to hate and they contradict themselves a REDICULOUS ammount of times.

I've got a customer complaing to an employee right now, so I'm getting off but will be back to explain better in a lil bit.

Ahhh I see.
I feel all of those five things in modern metal as well as, earlier metal, you see, I attempt to enjoy what all music has to offer, and if it inspires me, and or influences me as a musicianist (drummer) then I will listen to it. This means that I wont just listen to modern bands, but even stuff like Zeppelin, Floyd etc, because I understand that the bands I listened to where influenced by the first bands, and then I try to ascociate myself with the music that inspired them...
Now ofcourse you are a different mind, with a different personality, and I don't want to make it sound like I am trying to tell you what to think.

Yes I understand where you are coming from, but have you seen Mick (SlipKnoT) play guitar? I've compared him to some of the eariler metal guitarists, and he is up there. On their last he performs some pretty nice solos, along with Jim Root.
The thing is though. You feel as if the modern era is a whole lot of crap, well yes, and I will probably be saying the same thing about the future music. This is the thing. Music has to evolve in order for it to keep up on itself. You know what I mean...?

The music changes, because society and people change over time, and this obviously reflects on what the people think, because the people make the music.
And obviously the later generation such as you feel frustrated that their aren't the same bands as the ones you listened to as a kid/teen. While their are some modern bands that you may like, the unfortunate truth is that they two will dissapear, and the music moves on.

Currently the modern metal theme is the one you quoted, in ten years, what will it be, who knows. This is the beauty of music, that is continually evolving with and in syncronise with the society, and I don't think anyone can complain about that...

I however do share some of your feelings.

Yeah, I have seen that too. On the last album he performs some solos, which is pretty good. :)
