Slipknot

Badass Bitch 10-24-2004 11:41 AM

Hatebreed isn't metal, they're hardcore.

What do you mean by "modern" metal? do you mean newer metal bands because Metallica and Megadeth are from the 80's.

1. Shadows Fall
2. Killswitch Engage
3. Mesuggah

Mastodon is ALOT like Entombed...seems original must not be one of your criteria.

Uknown_Egde 10-29-2004 07:13 PM

I thought this was MODERN METAL, most of the bands mentioned are older than 7 years. I think modern concerns bands that have shown up in the past 2-4 years, such as Linkin Park, & Black Dahlia Murder.

Jesus Of Suburbia 10-30-2004 01:06 AM

Iron Maiden, Metallica, Killswitch Engage, Disturbed, Megadeth

Uknown_Egde 10-30-2004 09:48 AM

Hey Jesus, Iron Maiden, Metallica, & Megadeth are in no way considered "MODERN METAL", Check your stuff out, If i'm correct most of these band are 20 years and plus

Pit-Bull84 10-30-2004 10:53 PM

Modern Metal...a joke for a while.
I seriously fell under the idea that metal was long gone and DEAD.
I had no more faith in it at all!
All the metal I grew up listening to as a kid (Megadeth, Pantera, Dio, Maiden, Priest) always told me the same message: "Be strong and never let others tell you who you are."

I always appreciated that.

Then, listening to all the new "metal" coming out these days, I was seriously dissapointed, ESPECIALLY by the message: "Be depressed, kill yourself, blame it on someone else, and ALWAYS dress in black. When in doubt of your newly acquired personality, always check to see if it could be found at your local HOT TOPIC. Try to be more depressed than the next kid and sell your falsehood of a life to the media."

I'm glad there is a new wave of METAL coming out.
I'm glad the MUSIC has been revived:

1. Shadow's Fall
2. In Flames
3. Black Label Society
4. Superjoint Ritual (I love Dime and Vinnie, but their singer kills the majesty of their music. They should have taken Jerry Cantrell instead, IMO.)
5. Sentenced

Dude, wow, your so freaking right bout that. I can't stand new "metal" crap. It's all bout 'em old 80's metal like armored saints, skid row, dio, tesla, anthrax. Thats what should be ehard on the radio, non of this new ****!!

But there are some new bands that are coming out and leaving good impretion such as the ones named by pit, and other like evergrey, Iced earth....

riseagainstrocks 10-31-2004 05:00 PM

^none of those are new.

Uknown_Egde 10-31-2004 08:09 PM

Non of which

gregb 10-31-2004 08:19 PM

There are tons of great modern metal bands, but you won't find any on the radio or mtv, that is just common sense.

I don't go to either of those sources.

I don't plan on finding any good music on Radio anymore, there was a time when it was possible though.

Plenty of bands that were great got radio time: AIC, Soundgarden. Pantera, Zepplin, Skynyrd, CCR, ZZ Top, etc.

I'm just pissed that it doesn't work that way anymore.

Well, I grew up when Metal was being born.
I was young, but I knew metal all my life and this is what metal was:

1. Strength
2. Mastering your music
3. Mastering your instrument
4. relying on your music, your message, and NOTHING ELSE.
5. Writing for the love of it, not to impress others.

Slipknot doesn't stand for any of these things.

Their lyrics are all the same teen-angst ridden jargon that EVERY OTHER BAND IS PUSHING TO SELL RECORDS. I can't respect a "man" in his 30's who can't get over the problems he had in his teens, it's pretty pitiful.

Their music is the most simple crap I've ever heard.
They don't even make an ATTEMPT to be different, it's the same crap all the time: drop all of your strings and play the hell out of the top 3.

The only one who I can really respect for mastering his instrument is the drummer, he's talented, it's just a shame he had to settle for such a waste of a band.

They also market the HELL out of themselves and rely on gimmicks rather than talent. Just look at all the things they do for attention. It's not even music anymore, it's just a product.

And lastly, they don't write music for the love of it.
They let themselves be run around and managed by the same people they claim to hate and they contradict themselves a REDICULOUS ammount of times.

I've got a customer complaing to an employee right now, so I'm getting off but will be back to explain better in a lil bit.

taylormemer 11-09-2004 06:45 AM

Ahhh I see.
I feel all of those five things in modern metal as well as, earlier metal, you see, I attempt to enjoy what all music has to offer, and if it inspires me, and or influences me as a musicianist (drummer) then I will listen to it. This means that I wont just listen to modern bands, but even stuff like Zeppelin, Floyd etc, because I understand that the bands I listened to where influenced by the first bands, and then I try to ascociate myself with the music that inspired them...
Now ofcourse you are a different mind, with a different personality, and I don't want to make it sound like I am trying to tell you what to think.

Yes I understand where you are coming from, but have you seen Mick (SlipKnoT) play guitar? I've compared him to some of the eariler metal guitarists, and he is up there. On their last he performs some pretty nice solos, along with Jim Root.
The thing is though. You feel as if the modern era is a whole lot of crap, well yes, and I will probably be saying the same thing about the future music. This is the thing. Music has to evolve in order for it to keep up on itself. You know what I mean...?

The music changes, because society and people change over time, and this obviously reflects on what the people think, because the people make the music.
And obviously the later generation such as you feel frustrated that their aren't the same bands as the ones you listened to as a kid/teen. While their are some modern bands that you may like, the unfortunate truth is that they two will dissapear, and the music moves on.

Currently the modern metal theme is the one you quoted, in ten years, what will it be, who knows. This is the beauty of music, that is continually evolving with and in syncronise with the society, and I don't think anyone can complain about that...

I however do share some of your feelings.

itchytasty 11-09-2004 04:17 PM

not that it matters much, but i did see a video where that slipknot guitarist showed he could play his instrument. quite well.

shame he doesn't do anything close to that in any of his music.
