Does metal require anger and power?

I love all kinds of music, but something about injustice, anger and a desire to be more powerful always seems to flow through metal with me. How does it make you feel?

Piss Me Off 05-12-2008 09:09 AM

I don't really see Iron Maiden as being a particularly angry band.

TheBig3 05-12-2008 09:44 AM

I think thats more of an after effect. It draws a certain type of person to it [metal] and because of that, it breeds angry bands. Not to say that they are playing to an audience, I just think angry kids are inspired to play metal. When they do, they have to be angry.

I still strongly suggest that its very Machiavellian. If you can't be loved then be feared. And these anti-social akward bastards live vicariously through their Viking Overlords until they've convinced themselves that their the same way.

I really really hate metal kids. I'm sorry you aren't the life of the party with your filthy hair and your shoe gazer mentality, but make a ****ing effort, we're not all going to come to you.

Me neither.

Muzak 05-12-2008 06:48 PM

anger? Not necessarily.

Power? I would say not required but it is extremely recommended (so to speak). Metal is a very powerful genre.

That's what metal requires.

mr dave 05-12-2008 08:32 PM

turning up to 11 is so 80s.

15Steps 05-12-2008 09:06 PM

ProggyMan 05-12-2008 10:23 PM

Uh, this doesn't require talent?

does setting it to -1 suck sound into the amp?!

Seltzer 05-13-2008 12:07 AM

Metal = energy and aggression, not necessarily anger

I think that's a fairly laconic summary - obviously there are exceptions though.

I think many people would disagree there, even the most extreme death metal bands require very skilled muscians.

I agree with you... talent and skill fall into every category of music just as lack of talent and skill do as well.

In answer to the original question posed, metal makes the feel the need to play air guitar, drum on my steering wheel, and sing badly. :thumb: I try not to listen to it in the car too much now adays, since I suddenly transform into a NASCAR driver when it plays for some reason...

0 = silence
-1 = the sound of silence

Fools you do not know! Silence like a cancer grows!

We must cut away the canker which plagues us so!

Comus 05-14-2008 06:24 AM

I don't really find metal more aggressive than any other form of music.

when comparing to say, easy listening, country, pop, classical, jazz, reggae... Metal probably gets the "More Aggressive" trophy.

There are exceptions of course... but generally (imo) Metal is more in your face, rock n roll.

Why do you think Metal isn't more aggressive?

icebox 05-14-2008 07:38 AM

not really

I'm not fond of metal music but I don't think that you need to be angry to be able to sing or like the song. I guess it needs power of course.. the power to sing it loudly yet with feelings =D

thanks music banter for letting me in again .. truly appreciated =D

The ability to sound, both, like a menacing monster and an old lady in pain helps also.

Certain subgenres of metal (generally those I don't listen to) can be quite aggressive, but most proper metal has more epic than angry or aggressive undertones and it feels very calm and serene. Of course that calmness could be within a storm. But good metal shouldn't need to rely on anger.

good point... I think the nature of the instrumentation used for the metal genre can give the impression of anger/aggression even if the singer isn't trying to be. Perhaps this is why most people associate Metal music with mayhem, violence, aggression, anger, etc. they hear the guitars, drums and the way the singer is singing and instantly think the guy wants to gut his ex lover and go on a killing spree.

So what are some examples of Metal bands/songs that would prove other wise to those people?

Well, if you consider Zeppelin a metal band (some do, some don't) then I guess you can use them.

boo boo 05-14-2008 09:47 PM

I think the term "hard rock" exists for a reason. Zeppelin did really heavy songs that certainly sound metal, like Communication Breakdown. But calling them metal is a serious example of pigeonholing. Zep were certainly an influence on metal, and though they were very intense and energetic they certainly weren't angry.

When you look at a lot of the hard rock bands who were an influnce on heavy metal other than Black Sabbath. Like Deep Purple, AC/DC, Queen, Uriah Heep, KISS, Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Budgie, Hawkwind, Aerosmith. These bands weren't really angry, just very heavy (for the time) and that just branched into what we now indentify as metal.

enemyat_thesix 05-14-2008 09:51 PM

i hate when people hear harsh vocals and ask "why are they so angry?" you don't have to be angry to yell/scream/shout/growl

boo boo 05-14-2008 09:55 PM

And lets not forget power and progressive metal. Not really angry.

And then theres Van Halen.

http://www.anniemayhem.com/blog%20pics/VanHalen.jpg

Happy metal. :)

enemyat_thesix 05-14-2008 10:27 PM

*g ay metal

Van Halen are awesome.

If you want *** metal, try Manowar.
