1) "old" MetallicA
2)The Clash
3)Slayer
4)Iron Maiden
5)The CURE
6)ACDC
7)Queen
8)GUN n Roses
9)Motorhead
10)FEar Factory

Some bands may be better than others but these are the ones that are the essentials. If you dont agree than its not my fault.

Well, if im being asked objectivly then:

Guns n' Roses
The Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
Lynard Skynard
Metallica
Hendrix
U2
Greatful Dead
Neil Young

As far as im concerned:
Metallica
Gun's
Zeppelin
Queen
The White Stripes
Tool
Drive-by Truckers
Rage
Pearl Jam
Janes Addiction

To the guy who said "old" metallica: quit being a tool

To the people who didn't like the stripes: I know people like you, and im telling you, seeing what you listed, you should give them another spin, try these songs out...

Girl, you have no faith in medicine
Hello Operator
Fell in love with a girl
Black Math

And, for your own sake, reserve judgement of the songs until they finish, too many people pass them off because of his voice, to which I say "how did you survive Billy Corgan"
