Yeah, I know. Not that I'm happy about Hendrix at #1 but damn. John Lennon? For real?

Sodacake 06-05-2009 12:27 PM

There are no words to describe how stupid this AshleighJane character is.

Violent & Funky 07-12-2009 01:21 PM

Listening to Farm totally reminds me of why J Mascis needs to be at least in the top 100...

Norg 07-12-2009 08:44 PM

i think lennon deserves to be ahead of Jimi

remember he wrote most of the beatles stuff has well

and this hole list is bogus the fact that u didnt mention much artist from the 30's 40's 50's is a crime i would think when u say "ever" u should go back to the time Rock music first started when did it start anywayz LOL

Sodacake 07-12-2009 09:01 PM

I really can't tell whether you're trolling or being serious because I'm having a hard time believing anyone could be this thick.

Niko Molina 07-12-2009 10:00 PM

What about Synyster Gates in that top 200? He's only what, like 29 years old and he's already got an amazing guitar ability and so much more time to get even better!

He's a poor guitarist. The only reason he can record the ok solos that he does is because of studio magic.

Not true, saw them live back in the 'Waking the Fallen' tour days. Played every solo note for note. He's actually the only member of the band that can perform his work live. Everyone else dumbs it down. Especially the drummer. Synyster may be in a ****ty band, but the dude can play, studio magic has little to do with it.

Fender 07-13-2009 02:46 AM

John Frusciante is much better than 98. He has one of the best tones of any guitarist out there, he has the technical ability, and the creativity.

+81 07-13-2009 03:38 AM

^I second this

Sodacake 07-13-2009 08:12 AM

Well then maybe you should explain why Frusciante should take the place of some guitarists ahead of him and, I don't know, make an actual argument to support Frusciante being placed higher instead of just posting a random thought.

boo boo 07-13-2009 08:28 AM

Again this is a greatest guitarist list, not a best guitarist list, which is really a more subjective topic. Not saying this is completely objective of course.

This list would be very different if it were only my personal preference. Chuck Berry above Steve Howe in preference? Puleeeeze. I admit my biases have factored in a little bit, particularly the lower placement of metal shred guitarists. But overall I try to push my own subjective opinions aside and think about how much overall importance and impact a guitarist has.

With Frusciante, he's a great player. But people overstate his importance quite a bit just because he's a big name, I often see him topping guitarist lists, usually way ahead of players like Hazel and Cropper, with Jimmy Nolen and D Boon not getting any mention whatsoever. Frusciante wouldn't even exist without those guys.

That_Dang_Richer 07-13-2009 10:41 AM

Adam Jones and Duane Allman should be higher, and billy corgan isnt that good, but its an ok list

Did you even listen to Stadium Arcadium?

boo boo 07-14-2009 11:14 AM

Yeah, citing the worst thing he ever did, that doesn't mean he lacks creativity.

Many great musicians have times when they feel burnt out and uninspired.

+81 07-14-2009 12:15 PM

I agree with you about D. Boon, he's definitely underrated. For Frusciante I mostly regard him for his solo work. That's where I feel his creativity and playing really shine.

so why does he just keep repeating 'niandra ladies and usually just a t-shirt' with better vocals and weaker instrumentals?

KingOfTheOzone 07-15-2009 01:13 PM

Yeah I did. I actually think it is underrated. Most the people I know write it off because of the couple of tracks that were played on the radio. As far as hits go, Stadium Arcadium is weak, however as a whole, I think it is a solid album. Furthermore, Frusciante will be the first to admit that SA is the album where he had the most freedom (Solo Work Aside). He layers effectively and he is one of the best at using lead flourishes with rhythm guitar. It's the Hendrix influence in him.

And I agree with you Boo Boo about Frusciante not existing without many of the big names on the list. He's had so many influences, but he does have his own tone, and it's extremely unique. I always find it interesting that it always takes me longer to properly learn a song by Frusciante than a song by many of the more technically savy guitarists. I can learn a technically challenging song by Vai before I can imitate the tone that Frusciante utilizes. I know that doesn't hold any water in this discussion, nor is it the reason that I believe Frusciante is better than 98.

I just feel that because he is a big name and because he played for the RHCP it actually plays against him in a forum discussion like this, bc the tendency is to stray away from mainstream. We hear these names that get mentioned so often we get tired of hearing them. I could be wrong. Just my opinion.

I guess what I like about Frusciante is that he plays with a lot of feel. He puts a lot of soul in his music and isn't just wanking on a technical solo for 10 minutes. Most of his solos are really simple, but they have a lot of color to them. Even is solo work is incredibly simple. He doesn't focus on impressing others, he focuses on sound. Lol this paragraph is full of ambiguity, which isn't exactly useful in an argument. So I am sorry for rambiling.

Tuneman1 07-23-2009 04:13 PM

Ok, whoever said Petrucci plays robotic is a complete idiot.

He is by far one of the greatest composers of gut wrenching, emotional pieces of music.

Listen to:
Spirit Carries On
Universal Mind
Yste Jam
Octavarium, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (the suite)
All of: Systematic Chaos, and Black Clouds and Silver Linings album.

Technically speaking he is lightyears beyond Hendrix, or any of the classic rock guitarists, and much more prolific IMO.

He is technically the most gifted players, performers and composers. He destroys other shredders with his creativity with speed (see solos like Forsaken, Glasgow Kiss, and The Spirit Carries On) but also can play very low tempo, beautiful solos like at the Count of Tuscany

Seltzer 07-23-2009 04:25 PM

LOL

Wait until boo boo sees this.

Welcome back Don.

Tuneman1 07-23-2009 05:41 PM

Who is don?

Tuneman1 07-23-2009 05:43 PM

There is subjectivity, and then there is just complete irrationality. You simply can't put guitarists above him. Having Bo Diddly up there, is retarded. Thats like saying some piano bar pianist was greater than Rachmaninov

Why shouldn't Bo Diddley be up there?

because he wasn't nearly as good of a guitarist. Not even close to as prolific either. Was he a better bluesman? MAYBE. Guitarist? Gimme a break.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-23-2009 06:15 PM

I bet he inspired more people to pick up a guitar than your beloved purveyor of dullness.

Tuneman1 07-23-2009 06:17 PM

And the thing is people who don't rank him highly are the ones that don't even listen to the music. I don't know many that have given DT or Liquid Tension Experiment a chance, and don't put him in the top 10.

Also, when they he is a straight shredder, that is when you know they have no idea what they are talking about. Listen to State of Grace, or The Spirit Carries On and you will see page, hendrix, or others couldn't hold a candle to his "emotional" playing

Tuneman1 07-23-2009 06:18 PM

dulness... lol point proven

khfreek 07-23-2009 06:36 PM

Blues guitar is the epitome of playing with emotion. If you don't get it, tough luck. A lot more people will have greater emotional responses from a Jimi Hendrix or a B.B. King than John Petrucci.

Btw, this list isn't based on technicality. Even if it was, John Petrucci probably wouldn't make top 10.

Piss Me Off 07-23-2009 06:37 PM

I'm going to have to go with the guy with the Lionel Ritchie avatar. Never thought i'd say that!

crash_override 07-23-2009 06:42 PM

This whole arguement has been about John Petrucci? I was reading the posts and thinking at least this guy had a formidable candidate to argue upon. Give me a ****ing break dude.

are you kidding? Blues guitar has emotion, but so does the minor scale, or a couple of the other modes. A lot of people have greater emotional responses to Kanye West than any of these guys. But who gives a **** what they think. T

Tuneman1 07-23-2009 06:48 PM

Hey if you don't listen to Petrucci than don't put him on the list and admit ignorance.

However, you CANNOT call his playing emotionless and robotic.
