How about a novel idea the Beatles? Emphasis on melody instead of blues driven guitar playing or taking rock music away from 1-4-5 chord progressions, the Ricky Electric 12 string guitar, jangle sound, backward guitar, intentional feedback, looped guitars, basically started the Leslie guitar sound. George Harrison was the first rock guitarist to play the sitar, tamboura, and swarmandal on rock records. The distortion sound on "Revolution' was done by direct injection by overloading the channel. "I Feel Fine" combines intentional feedback with a riff-driven based guitar song. How novel was that concept. Led Zeppelin who!

Why the hell would Synyster Gates be anywhere near the top 200?

Mojo 02-25-2009 03:33 PM

I can honestly say (or should I say I think) he wouldnt make my top 200. Its a tall order to even compile a list but I highly doubt he would make it anywhere near.

Synyster is good. But not top 200 material. I agree.

dac 02-26-2009 09:12 AM

I've had SO many people tell me how good that guy is it's not even funny.

Seen him live and he hits every note verbatim. Not saying he's top 200, but he does his own thing pretty well.

This is just my opinion, I'll add a few more names to it and then I want to start my little blog project.

Like I said in an earlier post, nice list. When I first read it, I was a bit surprised that BB King and Buddy Guy weren't on the list, but I read your above explanation and accepted it. THEN, I heard BB King and Buddy Guy together on the Grammy's (with John Mayer and Keith Urban), and was blown away by Buddy Guy especially. So, I'm making a pitch for Guy to not only be on the list, but to be in the top 10! If you consider Stevie Ray Vaughan as blues rock, then Guy HAS to be, too. Just take a listen to tracks from his latest album--there are 3 songs on this site, and especially "Best Damned Fool" rocks.

BUDDY GUY :: SKIN DEEP :: ZOMBA MUSIC GROUP
If that isn't blues rock, then I'm...well...heterosexual. Attachment 3155 I'm willng to draw the line with BB King as strictly blues, but Buddy Guy is a maniac on the guitar, and it ain't just the blues....

pahuuuta 02-27-2009 12:08 PM

jimi hendrix sucks! sure he was good for his time and stuff and he is good at slow stuff but kirk hammet can beat him at soloing, michael angelo batio is the best guitarist there is, or maybe dimebag darrell from Pantera.

Piss Me Off 02-27-2009 01:27 PM

I think you're probably the only person in my entire life who has said Jimi Hendrix sucks. Seriously.

crash_override 02-27-2009 01:39 PM

Yeah that's sort of absurd. Overrated? maybe. But sucks??? I don't think so. Now Kirk Hammet, he sucks.

Pornographie Nouveau 02-27-2009 01:41 PM

I wouldn't listen to Jimi Hendrix, but I do acknowledge his skill. I've seen videos of him playing... it's like the guitar is an extension of his body.

Im sorry but I feel you contradicted yourself a little there. I agree that to say Hendrix sucked, ie to completely disregard any talent the man had on any level is crazy and whereas Hendrix may have been in a completely different league to Hammet I think the same applies.

Dimebag Darrell is/was the best guitarist there is...thats gonna keep me amused for the next few days

7gaugejames 02-27-2009 02:15 PM

so there is no truth to rock n roll guitar is rudimentry and repetetive only using 3 chords, and the like etc. Just stirring the pot, or is it smoking?

it's obvious that you're baiting guitarists here.

here's a clip of batio for those who don't recognize the king of cheese by name. yes, he's actually cheesier than malmsteen.

Now if he could kick pahuuta in the balls while doing that, then I'd say he is the best guartarist there is...

Mojo 02-28-2009 06:20 AM

Heh see I'll give MAB his props, he's talented. I know he will offend quite a few members here and to be honest his music does squat for me.

Michael Angelo Batio is the worst guitarist I've ever heard.

pahuuuta 03-02-2009 08:21 AM

coming from the guy with a buckethead avatar when buckethead and batio play the same exact music and have same skill levels

I don't even WANT to rebut, the stupidity is that grand!

pahuuuta 03-02-2009 08:37 AM

wat

Mojo 03-02-2009 01:17 PM

I think it was in response to your claim that MAB and Buckethead make the same kind of music.

yeah but some people are talented at shoving fists up their buttholes too. does it need to be celebrated?

just because you can doesn't mean you have to.

yes, MAB has some technical skill that's certain, talent on the other hand is arguable. his musicality isn't the best. he plays classic rock covers and cheese. it's not like there wasn't a david lee roth video with steve vai playing a 3 neck guitar in the late 80s.

personally as far as unorthodox tapping methods go stanley jordan OWNS

Mojo 03-02-2009 06:06 PM

I think MAB is talented. I didnt say I liked him.

Absolutely not, Buckethead is so much better than Batio it's not even funny.

pahuuuta 03-03-2009 08:18 AM

not really, at some stuff yes but not all are u crazy

jacklovezhimself 03-03-2009 09:24 AM

are YOU crazy?
"Jimi Hendrix sucks" is not something a sane person would say.

khfreek 03-03-2009 02:41 PM

Well to be fair, I'm pretty sure he's only heard 2 or 3 songs by Buckethead :\ So he's not stupid in that respect, just ignorant; but to deny Jimi Hendrix's skill is retarded.

jacklovezhimself 03-03-2009 03:57 PM

absolutely.
frankly, I couldn't care less what anyone says about buckethead.
but Jimi???

mr dave 03-03-2009 04:02 PM

so did anyone actually look at the clips i posted on the last page? stanley jordan doesn't generate ANY reaction from guitar players here?

i've seen drummer's jaws hit the floor due to that clip, guitar players are generally blown away. unlike MAB who is all flash or buckethead who comes off as an autistic robot, jordan balances both without resorting to sight gags and physical gimmicks.

nothing? really?

FaSho 03-03-2009 04:05 PM

I didn't watch it until now, but he's definatley an amazing guitar player.

khfreek 03-03-2009 05:20 PM

I've always loved Stanley Jordan, definitely should be on Boo's list :D

mr dave 03-03-2009 06:07 PM

glad i'm not alone in my opinion of jordan then hehe :thumb:

it seems over the last few years that buckethead has become the default standard of guitar virtuosity (i don't get it but whatever, i'm old). SJ isn't the absolute best there is out there but he's definitely worthy of attention too.

Mojo 03-05-2009 09:47 AM

On top of his overall virtuosity, he's very versatile and creative, perhaps even more so than the likes of Vai.

Says the guy who said Jimi Hendrix sucks. And if you think Buckethead and Batio sound alike you must be completely tone deaf and one of the most ignorant people i've ever had the misfortune of coming into any kind of contact with.

pahuuuta 03-06-2009 08:32 AM

hahaha thank you, well to get off that subject i would actually put sinister gates probably on the top 50-100
