Good Dark Folk albums
Does anyone know of any good Dark Folk albums? I ask for albums because when I look at some of the bands, they have large discographies so I would ask that album names be posted.

It is not so much dark Folk but have you heard Green Carnation's Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness? Just one hour long track but it has some great Ambient sections as well as plenty of heavy sections.

In the Woods - Heart of the Ages
Falkenbach - Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness, To the Nameless Dead Skyclad - Prince of the Poverty Line, Wayward Sons of Mother Earth Týr - Eric the Red(Not as dark as the rest, but definitely worth a mention!) The first three have some black metal influences, but in no way are the usual type of black metal. Well produced and very melodic. The harsh vocals aren't all the dominant either. There are a lot of clean parts as well. |

I'd suggest: Nest - Trail Of The Unwary Agalloch - The Mantle Uaral - Lamentos A Poema Muerto Tenhi - Maaäet October Falls - Marrat And anything/everything by Empyrium and Of The Wand And The Moon. |
This is an area that I do not know anything about. I have been told that Ulver are very good. Are they Dark Folk?

Ulver have done some dark folk'ish black metal. But Ulver have done pretty much everything. The Mantle was basically Agalloch doing Ulver worship. The last few years they have even done ambient/electronica. |
Angels of Light - How I Loved You. That album is stunningly beautiful.

Rezz get The angels Of Light album and listen to that. Dark Folk can combine elements of Metal too. It is generally downbeat but wonderfully atmospheric. CA could give a more erudite description. |
Now even I'm confused...are you looking for metal/rock stuff or just dark-folk?!
Something like This Anyways, you should try Darkwood's Flammende Welt. The lyrics are mainly in german, but I've found some translations. |

I can't post links so just do a myspace search for Varghkoghargasmal. That is dark folk. The band calls it wood metal...i guess you could call it whatever makes you happy.

good dark folk albums
I would suggest Jordan Reyne. Her lastest album is a dark folk / folk noir narrative (she sings though - beautifully) set on the west coast of New Zealand. You might want to check it out here: dubdubdub dot darkfolk dot de or you can just put jordan reyne in a google search (as a newbie I can't post links yet! sorry!)
I found a couple of reviews here too from the website: "A jewel of industrial folk...(Reyne's) fascinatingly powerful voice...and reliance on substance over gloss make „How the Dead Live“ an impressive album. Disturbingly beautiful. A must have - not just for lovers of dark and industrial folk, but for everyone." Unser Luebeck (Germany) "A fascinating and intense listen. Reyne's voice, as ever, is a gift and.. she chooses to use it by applying the tools of a story writer and an illustrator... here is something worth celebrating, a song writer who didn't come down in the last shower of record company advances and marketing hype" The Dominion Post (Wellington, New Zealand) Hope that helps! |
Apparently I can only post URLs after making 15 posts or more, so sorry about that. Editing the post with descriptions of how to look up bands I suggest
Archaic Earth on bandcamp, they have a 6 song EP that I Think would qualify, lost of natural soundscapes and ambience. You can look them up at archaicearth . bandcamp . com Wardruna is amazing, they play with all traditional norse instruments, they do most of the music for the TV series Vikings as well. Nuen Welten is awesome too, look up the 2 part song Destrunken on youtube, really unique style I Think Look up the album "For Whom The Moon A Nightsong Sings". It's a 2 disc compilation album of european dark folk/ambient music, and where I've found some of my favourite artists (some are listed here already). Message to Bears may qualify too? Check out the song Mountains, which has an official video on youtube, alot of their music and the entire first album are instrumental only. And Olafur Arnalds, while more of a minimalist composer, I feel would be enjoyed by anyone who's into the dark folk vibe. My favourite album is "And They Have Escaped The Weight of Darkness" to whom Agalloch has also done an homage on Marrow of the Spirit. Happy hunting! |
Ulver - Kveldssanger
It's like Bergtatt without the black metal |
