At The Drive-In VS. The Mars Volta

I have to go with the mars volta because theyre just easier to listen to imo

The Unfan 10-12-2008 08:40 AM

Neither.

joyboyo53 10-12-2008 08:57 AM

As much as I love ATDI, I feel like TMV is a more original and well composed sound.

FaSho 10-12-2008 01:23 PM

i do on the other like a lot of the tracks off of "reLationship of command" but thats probably because they sound like TMV

Peerbreed 10-12-2008 01:58 PM

This is a tough one. I'm going to go with TMV though. Even though I listen to ATI more I feel that TMV's albums are more exciting.

Alfred 10-12-2008 10:13 PM

Definitely At The Drive-In. They produced my favorite album ever, and I listen to them more often. I really like The Mars Volta too, though.

Which would be?

I'm not really into either, I think Cedric Bixler-Zavala's vocals are too grating for me to enjoy properly. I won't deny that Omar's guitar wanking is pretty cool.

Laces Out Dan! 10-12-2008 11:07 PM

Theres another thread like this but instead of closing this one and linking to the existing one. I'll leave this one open and edit it to make it more broad if thats fine with you FaSho. I'll add Sparta as well.

dac 10-13-2008 08:06 AM

tough, love em both, but i went with TMV

Zer0 10-13-2008 09:08 AM

At The Drive-In. The Mars Volta have yet to match Relationship of Command

Relationship Of Command.

I'm not just a fanboy of that album, though, I also enjoyed their other releases, but I think that is their greatest, and most would agree.

FaSho 10-13-2008 02:20 PM

its definnitley their best album but they sound a lot like TMV on some of those tracks so that why i think its so good

Alfred 10-13-2008 02:31 PM

In/Casino/Out is also a very good album, though on average, the tracks are less intense.

It seems they got better and better with every release.

Laces Out Dan! 10-20-2008 09:36 PM

Ive never found anything all that great about De Facto myself.

Mr Sensitive 10-21-2008 06:31 AM

Shawn's just saying that to appear different. =P

Teh Mars Volta.

first time caller 10-22-2008 08:47 PM

its all about sparta, duh.

Comus 10-24-2008 02:46 AM

Ahahaha, I voted for ATDI by accident, but yeah. TMV is my favourite modern band, it eclipses all else and is the only true (or even close to being) mainstream/semi-mainstream modern prog band. It's actually doing stuff that sounds different, and it does it so well. I love all their albums but Bedlam did it so much more for me recently. Amputechture however blew my mind completely when I first heard it. It's all good. But ATDI is mediocre at best, total crap generally.

FaSho 10-24-2008 03:48 PM

I thought Bedlam was by far their best work.

:bringit:

FaSho 10-24-2008 04:05 PM

I almost have to agree with him. The only album that I thougt was REALLY good was RIC.

Demonoid 10-24-2008 04:11 PM

....
Definitely The Mars Volta.
De-Loused > Relationship of Command

FaSho 10-24-2008 04:18 PM

Bedlam>RIC>De-Loused>In/Casino/Out

^^^more accurate.

Alfred 10-24-2008 04:18 PM

In/Casino/Out>De-Loused

FaSho 10-24-2008 04:19 PM

Fro me it comes down to this, Bedlam is the best TMV album and Relationship is the best ATDI album, and Bedlam is the better album of the two.

Demonoid 10-24-2008 04:26 PM

Well, I haven't listened to In/Casino/Out, so my opinion was just a bit biased there.
But, I'd definitely put De-Loused well ahead of bedlam. Oh well, TMV are winning anyways :D

GravitySlips 10-24-2008 05:53 PM

easily At The Drive In.

Comus 10-24-2008 06:25 PM

Easily wrong.

For me it's a toss up between Frances, Amp and Bedlam and that opinion will change depending on mood, De-Loused is brilliant, at any one time it's better than two of these albums, but will never be my favourite.

Relationship Of Command is better. I was just saying that I even like their second best over TMV's best (Though I'm not sure if I like it, or TBIG better).

FaSho 10-24-2008 08:33 PM

Except for De-Loused wasn't their best.

Comus 10-24-2008 08:58 PM

Exactly, and it never can be.

Laces Out Dan! 10-25-2008 12:46 PM

Frances is their best imo, but that said I might even like De-Loused more.

FaSho 10-26-2008 08:09 AM

Frances or Bedlam are the best. De-Loused will never be.

Laces Out Dan! 10-26-2008 11:11 AM

Why will De-Loused never be the best for you?

FaSho 10-26-2008 11:49 AM

De-Loused was the only TMV album I liked the first time I heard it, but it got really old for me. While Frances and Bedlam took me a while to really get into, but I still love to listen to them.

FaSho 10-26-2008 03:28 PM

^Agreed. And if you throw Bedlam in there you can't forget about "Goliath".

The Unfan 10-26-2008 05:20 PM

I gave it some thought and went with TMV. Though I consider both to be awful I can at least listen to 5 seconds of some TMV song without wanting to kill every member of the band. Where as I find any ATDI song to be ear shattering from the get-go.

FaSho 10-30-2008 03:49 PM

I can see that, both bands are definatley an aquired taste.

Rage Against the Machine 10-30-2008 04:04 PM

ATDI, without a doubt.

The Mars Volta is great, but it seems a bit like they're trying too hard. For example, the random 6 minute ambient break in Cicatriz. It's completely unnecessary (and ruins the song IMO) and it seems like they put it in there to look "super weird and progressive".

I'm on the opposite end of this one. The rest of the song ruins the cool ambient bit.

I totally agree. It's one of my favorite songs on De-Loused, but that part is not needed.
