Same criteria as The Beatles thread.
I am hoping this has'nt been done before. I will make an official thread when all the nominations are in ONE MONTH from today. Choose your track and explain why you chose it. I will then compile a MB top ten poll and use the best appraisals for each song in the top ten. GO. Voted: Dogs - 5 See Emily Play - 4 Echoes - 1 Interstellar Overdrive - 1 Welcome To The Machine - 1 Comfortably Numb - 2 Wish You Were Here - 5 Us & Them - 2 Time - 2 Pigs (Three Different Ones) - 1 Astronomy Domine - 1 Pow R. Toc H - 1 The Great Gig In The Sky - 1 Breathe - 1 Learning To Fly - 1 Bike - 1 Any Colour you like - 4 The Fletcher Memorial Home - 1 |
'Dogs' from 'Animals' because I could not imagine life without ever hearing it again. I don't think I could cope:)
|
See Emily Play: Something about the (as David Bowie put it) Peter Pan quality of Syd Barrett's music has always been seductive to me and I think this is my favorite one he's done; it's playful yet oddly fragile.

Echoes for sure.

Damn I love both of those songs a ton. Dogs is definitly my favorite 'Animals' track, the intense and sarcastic Water's lyrics along with Gilmour's best soloing (maybe). The climax at the end is amazing, the last minute or so of the song.
And I really get the Peter Pan appeal, it is an awesome feeling in Barrett's music. Wayne Coyne and Robert Hitchcock put it best in this interview: Quote:
It's a nice quick read, especially if you like both the Flaming Lips and Barrett. :) But ultimately my favorite song is Interstellar Overdrive. It didn't used to be my favorite Floyd song, but overtime the essence and crazyness of the song just captivated me. Amazing piece of work. My second favorite would probably be 'See Emily Play' or 'Matilda Mother', love the lyrics and passion put into the singing. |
Robyn Hith**** must have been majorly influenced by Barrett. At times he sounds a LOT like him.
|
Welcome To The Machine for sure.
|
Call this a cliche, but Comfortably Numb. David Gilmour is superb.
|
See Emily Play.
|
^Yuck. Sorry but I don't get the hype/credit or whatever that people like that song. Weird and boring noises and iffy vocals for me.
EDIT: To the 'Welcome To the Machine' vote by Alfred. |
"Wish You Were Here," though it was tough choosing.
|
yes, very hard to choose indeed, but i'll go with Wish You Were Here.
|
Us & Them
|
time / the great gig in the sky. i know they're two separate tracks but the great gig in the sky works too well as a coda for time to leave it off. i love how they use a voice instead of a guitar for the lead on that piece as well. those two pieces combined form what i consider to be one of the best representations of floyd i can think of. it's what i would play to someone who hasn't heard them before to introduce them to the band. you get a feel for their experimentalism, psychedelia, waters' introspective lyricism, and their ability to change the mood of their music without sounding convoluted.
echoes is a close second. |
wish you were here
so simple, yet so good. |
i would say time, but i've been so into Pigs lately so I vote Pigs
|
Wish You Were Here hands down
|
Dogs it is here as well.
|
Astronomy Domine. It's crushing.
|
Echoes is sublime.
|
Definitely "See Emily Play." Fabulous pop song.
|
I'm probably going to be alone on this one but Pow R. Toc H. would get my vote.
Firstly because it's my most listened to Pink Floyd song. And secondly because I think it's a shame they didn't do more of this type of stuff as they could have become one of the greatest avant garde / noise rock bands ever. |
The Great Gig in the Sky
Us & Them Time Shine on you Crazy Diamond Comfortably Numb Echoes The band more or less changed my life, and I enjoy all their stuff so much I don't think I could choose a definitive best. If I had to pick some of their best though, these would be them. |

There's a huge difference between Syd-era Pink Floyd and everything else, even in the early years. I love Piper, but honestly, it was made during an era when they were trying to emulate the psychedelic scene instead of creating their own sound (which also follows for Sgt. Peppers-era Beatles). Remember, Pink Floyd began as a blues act, not some avant-garde band. I have so much more respect for their later works, where they began to generate an original sound influenced by a number of great musicians. I think Meddle is where it began to come together, and certainly is one of my favorite records ever. |

I wouldn't have elaborated if I actually thought that way. :D

DOWN AND OUT GODAMNIT!!!!! |
Atom Heart Mother Suite:
This is my favorite track because it builds to the point of insanity. You hear the chaos in the begining of the song and then it builds up to the point in the end where it's all released. This is shown in one of the pieces "father shout". It's an awesome song and is grossly over looked. |
