What can the learned black metal veterans tell me about Deathspell Omega, I came across a review of one their albums and was very intrigued by the concepts in their music. Seemed like some pretty high brow stuff.

I'd say there's a marked differences between intelligence and amassing that which symbolizes intelligence.

Really, Black Metal seems to be dominated by idiot-savants. When people try to fit lofty ideas in a genre which is necessarily rather cramped aesthetically, it comes off as forced and unnatural.

(EDIT)

So, to your point, I'd say they're boring and not memorable. I'd rather listen Havohej, thanks.

They're a good band, They're now a bit more jazzy than alot of metal bands in general, let alone black metal. To me, they use their jazz influences perfectly, and dont end up being a pretentious band. But if you go back to their early stuff they were more in the mould of the second wave sound, repetetive riffs played fast, with low production quality.

Earlier sound

Most recent album sound

Another Ambient Black Metal band I was pointed in the direction of ages ago that I always love to name drop (because I never hear this band mentioned and it makes me feel trve and kvlt to name it) is Paysage D'Hiver.

If that doesnt create a cold atmosphere I dont know what will!!
