Best metal 2000-present

i've been reading around a lot on this forum and most threads always go back 20 years to the last time good music was made. no offence because a lot of good music was produced back in the day but there are still a lot of new bands coming out with talent. i am always checking out new bands and there are a few that are quite talented.

the point of this thread is to discuss metal, and of course there are a bazillion sub-genres, but i think most people understand what is and isn't a metal band at least by today's standards. there may be debate over who was metal and who was rock from the 80's but this discussion is for strictly bands of the last decade.

mock them, rate them, name your favorites, who do you think is good, who do you think is s***, start a discussion, or whatever just keep it to recent bands.

a few bands i have come across and have earned their spot as a regular on my playlists are:

devildriver: probably my favorite band of the last decade. also one of my favorites to work out too with its pounding beats. i like coal chamber as well so i obviously like the vocals, the drummer has some crazy fast double kicking, and some pretty good guitar work. all 3 of their albums rock from start to finish.

trivium: i liked their first two cd's a lot. 'the crusade' i liked when it first came out but it got old quick without the screaming. their latest i've been enjoying over the last little while a nice blend of the clean and screaming vocals. to me they are what metallica would sound like if they were still good. great stuff, definitely influenced by metallica, in fact they are the only band that can do a cover of metallica and do it just as good if not better.

the agonist: another band that is climbing into my favorites. they released their first album in aug. '07 and it was a pretty kick ass release. alissa white-gluz has an amazing voice. a great metal scream combined with clean vocals. i've always like bands with female singers, as long as their good obviously, and this is probably the best one i've heard since arch enemy. great stuff.

well there are 3 to get started. let's see what kind of discussion comes out of this thread. i have high hopes.

Dr. Psycho 01-27-2009 06:14 PM

Arkhon Infaustus. IMO some of the best extreme metal within this time period.

Surell 01-27-2009 07:01 PM

I like Mastodon. I heard a little Machine Head too, they seemed pretty good.

reno42 01-27-2009 07:15 PM

Serenity is my favourite 'newest' band; their first full album came out 2007 though they've been around since 2001. They're melodic metal, I suppose, not sure if they're doing anything outstanding or innovative, but I like them.

Embracethedeath 01-27-2009 09:38 PM

For modern death metal, everyone's gotta check out
Arghoslent
Necrovation
Kaamos
Repugnant
Dead Congregation
Deathevokation
Ignivomous
Pentacle
Hooded Menace
Ribspreader

RedChopin 01-28-2009 10:19 PM

Eh, Mastodon is okay i guess. By the way, is any of Foo Fighters considered metal? If it is, I would have to go with them! :)

Machine Head have been around a while but were always a little hit and miss. They have released some decent stuff but some absolute garbage also in their time. Their last album, THE BLACKENING simply urinates over everything else they did before it in my opinion.

As for my two cents worth:

THE SWORD

FREYA

WINTERS WOLVES

Mojo 01-29-2009 03:57 AM

CULT OF LUNA

BACK TO CHAPEL TOWN

I'm not knowledgeable on anything new but Pig Destroyer are alright. I love Mastodon though

I second Mastodon. Great band.

Ive never really properly checked out Pig Destroyer but they do sound alright.

Molecules 01-29-2009 05:12 AM

Pig Destroyer are more deathgrind (i think), for my money you just can't beat a progressive thrash band that has album concepts revolving around sea monsters lol

'I Am Ahab' :yeah:

punkrawker07 01-29-2009 07:39 AM

i've never heard a full mastodon album but i have a few songs and they are pretty decent. the agony scene is another band that's put out some pretty decent stuff. i think they may have broken up now. they did a great cover of 'paint it black.'

Urinates in a good way or a bad way?

khfreek 01-29-2009 08:41 PM

To be honest to punkrawker, I fucking LOATH The Agonist. I can not understand why they have any sort of success. (EDIT: I meant The Agony Scene <_<)

Between the Buried and Me has always been the top of my contemporary metal list... Protest the Hero and The Human Abstract are also great.

what's the issue with them? is it that you just don't like the whole metalcore genre in general or just this band? i can't say as they really do anything groundbreaking but you can't deny that alissa gluz-white has an amazing voice. i've always been a fan of female fronted metal bands, as long as it's good mind you, and this band in my opinion is one of the better ones of the genre.

Gojira - From Mars To Sirius
Cult Of Luna - Somewhere Along The Highway
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day Of Darkness
Agalloch - The Mantle
The Sword - Gods Of The Earth

gopaldev 01-30-2009 11:41 AM

All solid albums IMO.

So you prefer Gods Of The Earth to Age of Winters?

I definitely agree with Gojira, COL and Agalloch. Dont know Green Carnation and Amplifier.

Not heard Age Of Winters to be fair. Amplifier are from U.K and only made 2 albums. They sort of done a melodic/progressive type of thing. I think you would like them.

Maybe I'll check it out. Ill hook you up with Age Of Winters if you want, i imagine its fairly easy to find as well. Ive only listened to their second album a couple of times and I like it but it might be a grower. At present I much prefer the debut.

machined 01-31-2009 07:18 AM

I reckon Machine Head are probably one of the prime examples of pure metal today. Definitly one of my favs.

But they are still 6 years too early for this thread.

Amplifier is a fantastic band. Insider is great to, as well as there HAL ep.

tobz 02-04-2009 01:18 PM

i really like prayer for cleansing and scarlet a lot.

Embracethedeath 02-04-2009 06:05 PM

Just to let everyone who's into the whole black/thrash thing know, Absu's self-titled album has leaked. I think its up there with Tara but one can't really judge an album after two listens, so I'll make my final decision later on. It seems to have a lot of riffs reminiscent of the 80s german thrash scene. Really awesome stuff tho!

Roemilca 02-04-2009 07:41 PM

Opeth, SikTh, Meshuggah, and The Human Abstract have to be some of my favorites.

Turpis 02-08-2009 09:58 PM

Man i dont get these prog/ tech guys. aside from messhugah none of them seem to understand dynamics. ive never heard such fast music that was so boring. best metal 2000-?

kataklysm has been pretty sick. mostly people are just re-doing old things or taking one part of one genre and over-doing it. alot of people are getting into stuff like dillenger escape plan or the human abstract and calling it metal. that stuff is cool not that great but its hardcore not metal.

i am the only one here who actually likes metal? like real metal and not just cause of where it comes from?

Well why dont you tell us what "real" metal is then?

Kataklysm has not been sick as of recently. Actually, they sound like every other melodeath band to come out besides the fact that they're supposedly "hyperblast" or whatever the ****. Old school Kataklysm (i.e. MGoR, Sorcery, Temple of Knowledge) is the only good Kataklysm

gopaldev 02-09-2009 08:35 PM

Opeth

Embracethedeath 02-10-2009 09:59 PM

No.

Big_D_007 02-20-2009 10:17 AM

The Human Abstract
Lamb of God
God Forbid
Dead By Wednesday
Chimaira
Shadows Fall
Job For A Cowboy
As I Lay Dying(technically labeled alt.)

to name a few of muh favorites. check em out.

j0hnny_c4nuck 02-20-2009 07:06 PM

I think Dark Tranquillity has been a top band for awhile now, and are still pumping out quality music.

Protest the Hero and Meshuggah are pretty good though too.

crash_override 02-20-2009 10:20 PM

Opeth
Between the Buried and Me

These two bands pretty much own the sound of 2000-era metal as far as im concerned, not to mention how much they have progressed over the course of this decade. They are the first that come to mind.

p.s. Opeth released their 1st album in the mid 90's, but i still consider them more of a 2000 era juggernaut in metal.

Mojo 02-21-2009 07:54 AM

I dont see how Opeth qualify for this thread for that very reason, and they have been mentioned several times.
