They are almost all bad now, last few albums have been dreadful. But when they were on top of their game they were great. "Strap It On" is an under appreciated album, post-hardcore/noise rock... which featured one of the best songs in that style "Sinatra", after that album would mark their shift to the Alternative Metal scene with "Meantime" and "Betty".. though they still did retain some traces of noise rock on those as well. Those 3 albums are their essentials, with "Aftertaste" being decent, but not as great as first 3... would say that is more a fans album, not something the newcomer should start with.

It came with both age and whisky drinking, his earlier singing has more clarity. Its actually great to see the evolution of his voice from 67 to 71. The earlier stuff falls into the dark psychedelic and acid rock category despite the odd blues influenced songs.

Remember nobody from that time period was doing music like the Doors, of the other bands, only groups like the Velvet Underground were putting out similiar darker themed music, as were bands like the Stooges etc but none of these sounded anything like the Doors. You need to listen to their first three albums, because that is where the Doors legend was born. |

I can't think of anyone more tired and whiskey laden than Phil Anselmo on the highly entertaining double cd and dvd set, "Diary of a Mad Band". The first live audio disk is spot on stoner metal w/ Phil pushing the usual rough edge. The 2nd live disc he's pretty much drunk out of his mind on Jack, and gives some of the worst vocals I've ever heard. Completely tuneless and whiskey impaired. Still, you can rip a cd with 70 mins. of good quality live Down. Then there's the live DVD where's he's much better, plus you get to see a crack band crank out a bunch of great NOLA tunes. You might as well just check out NOLA, but Anselmo wasn't as tired or whiskey laden, so I don't know how much interest you'd have in that.

I'm burnt out on Pantera man.
Anyway, I have a few questions. 1. Been thinking about getting some "Super Furry Animals" (thanks to Urban) and saw this. Amazon.com: Fuzzy Logic/Radiator: Super Furry Animals: Music Should I get this or the normal edition of Radiator? Do these type of things come with both liner notes? (This is actually cheaper than both of them seperately) 2. Duga has recommended the Blur discography to me. Would it be worth it to get "13," "Parklife," "Blur" and "The Great Escape" for 13 dollars? 3. Are any of the following bands discographies worth buying? Also, could you guys recommend me any discographies that would be relatively cheap to purchase used on Amazon? (Around 6 - 10 albums is ideal) AC/DC (just the Bon Scott stuff or Johnson too?) Led Zeppelin White Stripes Velvet Underground Pixies 4. I have thought about going down Urban's 100 list and buying everything he has there starting from his favorite album. Do you think this is a good idea? Should I explore an artists discography if I like the album or should I try to stay strictly to his list? I love you guys. ![]() |
