Default Funeral Doom

Time to talk about one of my favorite genre's again!

Funeral Doom is the most oppressive, devestating, and depressing styles of music out there and when listened to in the right mood, it's awesome!

Check out: Ahab - The Call of the Wretched Sea, Thergothon - Stream from the Heavens, Asunder - A Clarion Call, Wormphlegm - Tomb of the Ancient King, and Mourning Beloveth - The Sullen Sulcus for a good overview of what it has to offer.

Anyone who wants to hear some stuff check out

Ahab
Thergothon
Mourning Beloveth

Mourning Beloveth aren't funeral doom, they are death-doom and one of the best in that genre

Good list, i would put Catacombs and Skepticism in there too.

I'd disagree. Funeral doom has variation and Mourning Beloveth are at the "faster" end, but I (and most of the educated metal community) would plant them firmly in the fd camp. And especially for MB, the death-doom aspects are close enough to fd that it's essentially the same thing.

And yeah Catacombs are great. Never really got into Skepticism as much. I tried Stormcrowfleet and didn't like it much. I'm gonna dig it out and try again though.

Really? Well...my uneducated ass just checked metal-archives and last.fm (not that i need to check,i'm a doom fanatic), both have MB as death doom.

You've got it the wrong way around. MB are death doom, with the occasional funeral doomesque passage. Listen to Ahab or Skepticism...that is proper funeral doom, and it is distinctly different from Mourning Beloveth. In fact i can't ever remember anyone saying MB are funeral.

If you think MB are funeral just because of the slow tempo, then so were Morgion...which is just wrong.

MA is good for fact-checking and that's about it.

I consider MB to be funeral doom due to the pace, the song structure (mostly long, dreary guitar lines), and lyrical content. But as I said, MB really straddle the line as far as I'm concerned.

Enough splitting hairs, more people need to listen to the bands mentioned in the first post! Get on it!

Not really big on Funeral Doom, but i really do like Ahab, Shape of Despair, Nortt & Asunder.
Virgin Black's & Esoteric's latest releases weren't all that bad either. Although i really do get put off by virgin black's vocals at times. It's more death/doom but yah, like you said, many of it sound very similar to funeral doom.

Ok agree to disagree. Reverend Bizarre are slower than MB, you won't ever hear anyone call them funeral, ever.

I don't think that you will win many people over to the genre man, funeral doom is an acquired taste even for battle hardened metal heads like us.

I think Ahab have a new album due out very soon don't they? COTWS was 100% killer

I don't think it's all that of an acquired taste for anyone familiar with extreme metal...or atleast for me. I find it highly dependent on my mood though.

Can't say I've heard anything about it, but that would be sweet. COTWS is probably my favorite fd album!

Why is it when a particular genre is mentioned in the Metal forum it ends up as 'No it's not (insert sub genre) 'oh yes it is'?

It's such a shame that more nitpicking goes on than actual discussion half of the time.
