there's a pretty large spectrum of progressive metal, ranging from Opeth (who are usually billed as death metal) to King's X. Symphony X were one of the defining progressive metal bands. more symphonic metal bands like Ayreon took it in a different direction entirely, but they brought new light to the genre.

I saw a couple of posts hating on Death metal. sure there is some crap in most Metal genres but c'mon. this is absolutely immense and from 2:47 it's cream time:

I actually liked that, if that's what's normally considered death metal. I was thinking of Cannibal Corpse and Carcass, both of which I haven't heard anything good by.

The very thought of those 2 bands being in the same sentence saddens me. By all means dislike Carcass but please don't lump them in with that joke of a band.

Blackened death metal, progressive doom-death, and technical death metal to clarify for those who are just getting into the genre.

Carcass are good, and I'll even say the first 3 Cannibal Corpse albums are pretty essential.
