Nirvana to me were just a bunch of whiny, little depressive, cry-baby's making an attempt to stick out from the other bands in their circa by b*tching about life. I couldn't stand to hear Cobain's whiny voice time and time again about how he couldn't figure out his own unproductive life.

I also look down upon any music that doesn't cheer you up. Nirvana wasn't grunge.... They were EMO!

they werent emos, they were just playing music that they liked. Kurt never expected them to become famous and he never expected that people would ever want to listen to his music. I think he preferred it when people DIDNT listen to his music actually...

lol. If Kurt Cobain didn't want to become famous he would've stayed on Sub Pop. Fans who argue that Cobain had this super indie ethic about his music are silly.

he was pressured :D

the Sub Pop crew, Pavitt and Poneman, still managed to make a killing out of it because of all the kiddos that bought Nirvana's first LP after Nevermind broke wind. and they managed to get a significant share in the Nevermind sales as well because they sat Cobain down and made him sign a contract.

it was rumours :D

and there were types of people kurt didnt want listening to his music and axl took advantage of this and turned heaps of gnr fans into nirvana-haters at the time

lucifer_sam 07-01-2009 09:32 PM

and that doesn't even remotely make sense.

especially considering he painted the led zep logos on his wall (at least according to interviews i remember). he wanted to play music for a living. they wouldn't have been playing showcase gigs for major labels if they wanted to remain obscure. i have no doubts that he wanted to maintain his personal aesthetic to his music, but to remain obscure, don't think so.

sub pop cashed in on nirvana when they sold the remainder of their recording contract to geffen. cobain might not have liked it but he didn't need to. ever had an outstanding debt be taken over by a 3rd party collection agency? contracts can change corporate hands without the knowledge or will of the individual involved. if the guys from sub pop sat down with cobain prior to selling their rights to the future albums it was a good, but unnecessary, gesture on their part.

the only element of label pressure i recall reading about was the use of butch vig as a producer for nevermind. they didn't like his overall sound, but he was the hot producer of the day and geffen didn't leave much choice for the band that had yet to prove themselves in the market.

Kurt Cobain was very ambitious, he simply wanted the rock 'n' roll lifestyle and everything that came with it. When he got it, he fucking hated it and bitched and moaned about it.
