On the other hand Holmes disappointed me. I enjoy QOTSA and such but I am mainly a fan of his early Kyuss work which seems to not be apparent at all in this recording.
yeah the sludgy tone has most definitely been cleaned up significantly. i think what really makes him sound 'distinct' from his other projects was jimmy paging his guitars on most tracks (triple tracking).

I think you have bad speakers or something. The drumming is pretty much the dominating instrument in most songs.

I like what I've heard so far, I just hope they do another album. I feel like this band has so much potential we haven't even seen yet.

I think Grohl's drumming is absolutely awesome on the record. He's doing some great stuff there and I think it definitely stands out compared to your avarage rock album (like the whole album actually). However sound wise I think they could've done a lot better. The production isn't all great. I was hoping that they would be able to copy the same mind blowing sound as the live gigs I saw but unfortunately they didn't. Then again this music is best heard live anyway. If you remotely like the album catch them live if you get the chance.

Rock music almost always sounds better live. I don't think they could've done a better job recording this stuff. There's just no way you could reproduce that amount of decibel at home...:\

Just wait for some bootlegs. Now that there playing shows surely they will slowly leak out there.

admittedly my first listens were in a car so not the best setup. after listening to it a few more times the drums aren't that bad. although i wouldn't say call them the dominant instrument in more than 2-3 songs.

it's more the production and how they fit into the mix of the music that bothers me. basically when the albums done i'm left wondering what i just listened to, it's not really new, not really old, not bad at all, but not overly great either.

at times the album is almost 'too' heavy, like there are too many tracks going on at once and the focus gets lost. it's like they forgot how to let their instruments breathe.

I love car stereos. even ****ty ones give you the surround sound feeling with a little bump in the bass.

Wow, so the predominant feeling here seems to reflect the Pitchfork review, I'm stunned. This is easily one of the best rock records of the year. :|
