To clarify - I like the Grateful Dead just fine at this point ... but it took me YEARS of serious opposition and hearing bits of different records and different shows when they were playing on late-night radio or at friends' houses to get me to a point where I could find something appealing in it ...

Their existence-over-time / body-of-work is astonishing when seen as a whole ... but no casual listener could possibly see it as that ... in fact, any single album or show (let alone song) could be scene as a sort of incomplete reference to the larger body-of-work, making no sense unto itself without the larger context (although that is an extreme and probably unjustifiable point of view) ...

I would label them "challenging" mainly as there is so much to take in prior to appreciation, in addition to the cultural baggage that goes along with them ... but ultimately (for me) an enriching listen, over time

I like the Grateful Dead, they're a great band, though a lot of their stuff is something I just appreciate, I don't listen to them very often.

I've had a hard time trying to get into Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band as well as the obscure Canadian hip hop artist Gruf The Druid.

You said Gruf was pretty hard to get into but i got into him pretty easily. Must just be me. Do you like Dalek? The most avantgarde rap i've listened to anyway

Joking aside. I understand that "Inaccessible" depends on the person.

So for me, the music of Fred Frith and Glenn Branca isn't anywhere near as inaccessible as say, the music of ZZ Top or Bad Company, so accessibility like everything else is a subjective thing.

I didn't like Bad Company at first but I started to appreciate them lately, and ZZ Top is one of my favorites, I consider them as having a "less is more" approach to guitar playing, and having "less" make every note is important to the song.

It's like who can honestly say they know every single note that Clapton or Buckethead is playing, right?

Dalek were pretty easy to get into for me, however I have heard that they can be hard to get into, I guess my version of Gruf for you.

I see. Is there a specific album that you would reccomend for me to start with?

I always thought of Bad Company as a disappointment especially given the quality of Paul Rodger`s stuff with Free.

Early ZZ Top were certainly unique with their southern blues boogie sound and "Deguello" was certainly their highlight......and how could anyone forget those boilersuits and beards.:tramp:

If this isn't just restricted to Rock music, I'd like throw Autechre in the ring. You have to leave all notions of conventional rhythm at the door when you decide to listen to them, and it can take a while just to get used to that - and that's before you move onto actual tunes and whatnot.

For me though, once it clicked I fell in love - and now they're one of my favourite acts.

I got to say that I actually liked that, although it gets kind of old after a while. I would like to see that style mixed with some other more accessible stuff. It just doesn't stand well on its own for me. Although I can see myself warming up to this kind of stuff in the future, it just might be a matter of devoting time to getting to understand it better.

Trout Mask (or Beefheart in general) doesn't sound inaccesible to me anymore, once you get to that point where you "get it" it almost has a pop-ish feel to it, it almost feels catchy at times.

Interesting band but i'd get a headache listening to them after a while. This this even music??

Antonio 08-16-2009 03:48 PM

Sunn O))).

other than that, most other things avante-garde stuff i've heard, from Beefheart to Animal Collective's first few albums(which are almost NOTHING like Merriweather Post Pavillion), i can get into and enjoy

hell, i even liked that Merzbow track, what cd is that on?

EDIT: hahaha, just as i was typing this, Butthole Surfers came on

that was actually pretty cool, experimenting with tones and sounds.

WeeLittleHobbit 08-17-2009 12:04 AM

Honestly people, I've found something that is more inaccessible than anything else mentioned here: yes, even more than Merzbow. I believe this is the most inaccessible "music" I've ever, and likely will ever, come across. I give you---- STALAGGH.

YouTube - Stalaggh new track video - the most extreme 'music' ever?

WARNING: Not for the faint of heart. I wouldn't listen to this by myself for very long if I were you. It's absolutely disturbing. And for your own sake, don't listen to it if you're in the dark.

Oh, and for future reference, how the hell do you post videos on here? Can't figure the damn thing out.

Antonio 08-17-2009 12:06 AM

hmmm, well it defnately got my attention.

coolio.

and btw, i'm by myself and in the dark.

WeeLittleHobbit 08-17-2009 12:10 AM

Well, aren't you a trooper!

Antonio 08-17-2009 12:11 AM

haha

but yeah, it was pretty cool, i wouldn't listen to it all the time, but if it came one, what the hell?

WeeLittleHobbit 08-17-2009 12:16 AM

From what I've gathered, the people who made this "music" recorded the voices of mental patients. So basically the "vocals" are mentally/psychologically insane people screaming. Pretty hellish. As fas as coolness goes, I think it's an interesting idea, but I don't consider it particularly artistic. And God knows it doesn't sound good. At least to my ears that is, I can't vouch for everyone else.

Holy sh!t! That freaked the hell out of me :yikes: that's probably the most disturbing 'music' ive ever heard
