I prefer Metallica to Megadeth. The first reason for this is because Metallica has a more brutal, thicker, and heavier sound. All of Metallica's riffs are downpicked. That by itself is awesome, but their riffs are a constant presence and the driving force of most of their songs, as opposed to blinding fast riffs Mustaine often plays that are not usually downpicked. It's a different style, and different songwriting. I'll take the intro to "Master of Puppets" to "Holy Wars..." 100% of the time. There isn’t a single guitar solo in thrash metal that I like, so the fact that Mustaine often writes 4-5 mini-solos into his songs isn’t exactly something that I care for. As far as songwriting, I just prefer Metallica's approach. Their instrumentals on their first four albums are very impressive, their lyrics are simplistic, and I find Metallica's albums are generally more well-structured and true to a theme than Megadeth's. As far as Ulrich, I actually like that’s he’s a sub-par drummer, because he just plays in rhythm with the guitars, which makes the guitars more noticeable. Also, because Metallica does not emphasize speed much, Lars plays heavier. Can you name a more powerful beat than “Sad But True?” I can’t. The snare drum on that song is absolutely sensational. tl;dr: I much prefer Metallica's heavier, slower sound to Megadeth's technical, faster sound. |

I dig some Megadeth, and I grew up on Metallica, but from a longevity standpoint, Metallica has more staying power. Mustaine and his drug addled behavior may have fueled his popularity, but really took it's toll on the music. Take a look at the past/current band members of both bands, and that'll put some things in perspective. It's hard to get chemistry going when you have a band with a revolving door. The one thing Dave had going for him was Marty Friedman, but he blew that. Friedman stated "Musical differences" for his reason to leave, but I'll bet money that the real reason was that Mustaine was just a dick.

It's also the perfect example of a difference of opinion expressed in an ideal way. Makes it easy for a conversation to flow without opinions clashing to the point of causing offense. I'll say that the guys in Metallica could have gotten a drummer that does everything Ulrich already does, but better. I understand that the guys felt that Ulrich was perfect for what they wanted to achieve, I mean obviously the formula or idea behind the band has worked with mostly original members, save for the never forgotten Cliff Burton, tragic...and Jason Newsted was not at all a half bad bass player, he's actually a pretty accomplished one. I'll always prefer him over Rob Trujillo. Not to say Rob isn't any good, because he's great. And aside from what I already mentioned for my reasoning behind saying I prefer Mustaine of Hetfield, I really cannot think of any other reasons. Mustaine has his issues, he's always been unstable and hard to work with. But underneath all of that is a great musician. I might go back and listen to all of the earlier Metallica material and compare it to some of Megadeths earlier catalog, my opinion of the two bands could have changed a bit over the years from not really paying attention to either band since maybe 2005. |
Megadeth sucks
Metallica
Slayer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqnC54vbUbU Anthrax http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGHsxMqpL0c Megadeth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkJEvpwDBXY |
Like there's any of those, even Slayer, that didn't eventually sell out and/or put out a sh*tty album.
I'm definitely not a Mustaine fan but even Megadeth had their moments. |

The whole Megadeth vs. Metallica thing is just silly. Do people really have nothing better to do than to be militant fanboys over a band?

I've never heard a Megadeth album that I liked. I did see them live a long time ago though and they were pretty good in that context.

I'm a huge fan of Megadeth up to and including Rust In Peace. Marty wanted to go in a softer direction and although there are some good songs on the Countdown and Youthanasia albums, it just doesn't compare at all to the old Megadeth when Mustaine was pissed-off and fueled by heroin and cocaine. I love old Metallica, too but am not a fan of much of anything past ...And Justice For All.

Dave's Megadeth is a shredding band while Metallica is uh...is..well ok I guess. I felt that the breakup or leave of Dave was best for both. Dave was why I was a Metallica fan to begin with so...

I've just started getting into these guys, and I find them much more interesting than Metallica. So far, I've purchased everything up to The System Has Failed. It's all I've been listening to lately.

I've been a Megadeth fan since Peace Sells. However, they jumped the shark after Hidden Treasures and I've only heard spotty material here and there, like the song 44 Minutes on Endgame.

I live near Portland OR, and just found out these guys are playing down in Eugene tonight. How did I miss this?

'Angry Again' is the only Megadeth song I've ever listened to and thought "Yeah. I dig it."
The others I've heard make me think "I don't see how playing a pretty generic metal song really, really fast makes it any good." |
