^ That's basically the album that got me into rock music (or at least the good stuff), and if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for anyone!

Led Zep IV
Black Sabbath - Sabotage

Janes Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger

Judas Priest - Screaming with a Vengeance
Iron Maiden - Power Slave
Motorhead - Ace of Spades

Stage 6: Thrash
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Metallica - Kill'em All
Megadeth - Rust in Peace

They're metalheads if they make it all the way to 6, and there are many more types of sub-genres to explore.
Yeah, man. EXACTLY what I was gonna write.. well.. that's the jist of it.. the "stages" and all.. but.. whatever!

Holding somebody at gunpoint, to listen to a bunch of demos and outtakes!!! Surely you can come up with something better than this to impress people with.

Generally, I'd tell someone that wants to get into rock to start with Sabbath or Hendrix.
I guess I would give them different advice depending on their current preferred genre, though.
Classical or Jazz (not that I'm saying the two genres are closely related): Maybe Dream Theater, Tool, or Devin Townsend's "Ki".
Pop: Devin Townsend's "Addicted" (I almost feel like I'm kissing DT's ass, but wth, he deserves it) and... sorry, nothing else comes to mind as far as that.
Rap and Hip-Hop: I'll just kill them for listening to that garbage... No, haha, Korn, Stone Temple Pilots, Godsmack (only because alot of my friends that like rap like 'em)
I'd like to mention that I gave this close-to-0 thought... Thank you, SljSlj, for the most useless post of the day.
