released in 1975. Even RateYourMusic lists this as the first punk album (do what you will with that, not written in stone)

You'd really think if they / Handsome Dick Manitoba were truly the originators of punk rock they'd have a more substantial claim to pop culture than being the has-been that forced Manitoba (the electronic artist) to rename himself to Caribou.

Hearing HDM on the radio trying to justify his legal action was a new kind of pathetic.

just got a whole bunch of punk stuff from the "Best Punk Album" thread

i shall dissect each one to see where their influences come from

As i said, that is just the first album listed at RYM if you look at Punk Rock. I am not saying it is the first, but was opening it up to see if anyone else would at least consider it to be one of the first.

The post was more to say I am surprised to see it has not been considered. Maybe it is not, but could play a part.

As for the lawsuit, yeah that is pretty silly. But I do not know if I would say that has much effect on pop culture either. Caribou is hardly a household name that is on the tip of most peoples tongues himself.

Has been or not, I think to people into the genre of punk, he has a claim to fame and I would rather look at what he did at the time than what he has or has not been now.

I always thought it was Patti Smith and the stooges.

My Generation by The Who is considered "the first rock song", Go Girl Crazy by The Dictators is considered the first punk rock album, and Ramones are considered the first punk rock band. So it's pretty hard to narrow down to who invented it.

Have you even heard that album? It sounds nothing like punk.
It's just a combination of bad Glam rock & bad Pub Rock.

Down By The Jetty by Dr Feelgood sounds more 'Punk Rock' than anything The Dictators did and came out earlier, The Ramones said they were influenced by it, so why not call that a punk rock album?

"Runaway" was the first progressive rock song, not the first punk rock song

but punk like an attitude? punk like a concept? punk like a tag in musical stiles? That's a big question guys..
