Soundgardener 03-03-2005 03:53 PM

Soundgardener 03-03-2005 03:53 PM

plus this thread is a clone of the ramones vs. sex pistols thread so why did you make it in the first place?

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-03-2005 04:13 PM

The phrase 'Punk Rock' comes from a fanzine cover in 1974 about Lou Reed

There you go

sometimes a good observation puts a smile on my face. If only more people realized that stupid over-talked about topics such as this one are abundant on this site.

Anarchy doll 03-03-2005 06:24 PM

well, there is not much of a selection there to vote for, but I would say in all fairness that it would be the Sex Pistols....of course....because they were around first and came from where punk was originated, and was needed the most. Good ol' UK!

sleepy jack 03-03-2005 06:36 PM

Where are the stooges?new york dolls?velvet underground? THE FRICKEN DAMNED!!They were around before the pistols or the ramones....

All_Nite_Dinah 03-03-2005 08:09 PM

So were Buddy Holly, Elvis, and Chuck Berry.

sleepy jack 03-03-2005 08:33 PM

What im saying is the ramones started round 73 at the earliest and PLUS the new york dolls were around way before the ramones were cause johhny says he was inspired to play guitar by the New York Dolls. So obviously the ramones werent about before the new york dolls. If your talking album wise....

The Damned:New Rose '77
The Ramones:Ramones '76
The Sex Pistols:Nevermind the Bullocks heres the sex pistols '77
The New York Dolls:New York Dolls '73
Iggy And The Stooges:Open Up and Bleed '68

Looks like the stooges won that and they were the first far as i know and care.

I still think its funny that people think The Velvet undeground And Nico Are Punk rawk! I looove the velvet underground, and I can see how they influenced alot of punk bands but honestly I dont think there a punk band per say. Listen to Ill be your mirror, all tomorrows patrie, or femme fatal and tell me how punk they are. I love the velvet underground and always will but I think anybody who listens to alot of them can tell you that they are no doubt one of the bands very responsible for escalating the music scene that allowed punk to evolve but arnt really that much of a punk band.

And I know this is going to come up so I will post my rebuttel now, I dont care if there was a lou Reed article proclaiming the Velvet Underground as punk rock. I've read plenty of articles about how punk rock good charlote are and thats still not the truth. Music journalism fails again.

hookers with machineguns 03-04-2005 07:34 AM

I think it's because a lot of the earlier movement bands site Velvet Underground as an "influence", but then again, who didnt listen to the Velvet Underground, and who didnt they influence? I've heard lots of people put them and The New York Dolls at the forefront of punk rock, but clearly if you listen to their music, there's no elements of punk at all. Pure rock and roll. I suppose you can say The Beatles and Chuck Berry had an influence on some punk bands, so should we call them the first punk artists?

Exactly! iggy pop is also renowned as the beginner of punk.........

sleepy jack 03-04-2005 04:18 PM

OKay then im going with iggy and the stooges for 500 alex.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-04-2005 05:13 PM

It depends on how you look at it , punk didn`t just exist it evolved. The question is how far do you want to go back?

You want to say Iggy & The Stooges were first? Why not MC5 or the Sonics , those bands both played the same sort of music as the Stooges yet they pre date them.

The New York Dolls? Most of their stuff is basically a rip off of Beggers Banquet era Rolling Stones , Are the Stones the first punk band?

The Velvet Underground? The only reason they get mentioned is because they were basically an art rock band & most of the British punk movement were in art school.
The Velvet Underground influence people like Bowie , Bolan & Roxy Music rather than the punk era.

Simple answer? Neither band created the scene or named it.

All_Nite_Dinah 03-05-2005 08:03 AM

Thats why the ONLY logical answer is Mr. T.

But seriously like you say I dont think any one band started the movement its just something that evolved in different forms. Im sure way back in the day when kids threw on the new Chuck Berry or Elvis disc There were people saying "damn punk kids" shou

the velvet underground basically influenced everybody who based their lyrics on darker aspects of life as really, thats what made them stick out from the decade of love. the reason you say they influence art rock bands is their allegiance with andy warhol yet lyrically, a lot of punk is influenced by them as with sound, in the 60s they patented the edgy, uneasy sound we hear from a lot of punk outfits today and indeed the 70s.

All_Nite_Dinah 03-05-2005 01:02 PM

If darker aspects of life are influence for punk I could also nominate Billie Holiday and the singers of african american folk music as the first punk rockers. Really african americans have always tended to use off kilter rythms and synocpation in there music so maybe its true that punk goes all the way back to the slaveships, and the cotten fields of Georgia. This argument could go on forever, and no progressis made. Who cares who the first band was anymore, its here thats the past its over.

Have you actually heard the Velvet Underground & Nico ?

It sound more like the soundtrack to some arty french film than anything.

I've been saying that for quite some time but I dont think I have a high enough post count for people to belive me. Its like I posted on page 2 theres no way that is a "punk" album by any standards. Its awsome, but nothing about songs like Ill be your mirror is punk. Like I say, I dont think I have the post numbers for people to belive me though, maybe in another couple months Ill be popular enough....

leftinkowloon 03-06-2005 12:58 PM

ramones and the pistols made punk a trend, those two bands did not create punk. punk sucks though but i have to aurgue because it's fun. all punk is now is a huge fashion competition, who can get the coolest converse shoes or wear the wierdest pants or stand out the most. it's all friggin ***.

No no no no , you`ve got the wrong end of the stick.

Thats where the name comes from. They were not saying Lou Reed was 'Punk' , you have to remember there was no punk movement in 1974 when this fanzine was written. What they were suggesting was that Lou Reeds music appealed to 'punks' as in people on the streets , junkies & social outcasts , hence the music was called 'punk rock'. It`s got nothing to do with the sound of punk or what became punk. Thats just where the phrase was coined.

After a little research I have determined that the orgins of punk actualy came from a 1920 silent cartoon film called The Punk Piper.
