5 albums for a rock newbie
Hey ive only just started to get in into rock music recently being a life long underground hip hop fan (say what you like i dont give a f*ck) and so far ive heard bands like Rage Against The Machine, System of a Down, Seether (Seron Gas) and Three Days Grace but i dont really know where else to look i order to broaden my horizons so to speak. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest these: Faith No More - Angel Dust (1992) http://evolkweenthemusical.files.wor...eangeldust.jpg Tool - Aenima (1996) http://mimg.ugo.com/200808/16538/Aenima.jpg |
Rock is a very broad genre so it's hard to tell what you're looking for, but I would suggest starting with some more mainstream stuff such as Foo Fighters' Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace and Red Hot Chilli Peppers' By The Way. Going a bit more heavy System of a Down's album Mezmerize is good and for a bit of prog I'd go for some Rush but I'm not too familiar with their discography so I couldn't really suggest an individual album. Those bands should give you quite a wide variety.

The Doors are awful and so are all of you. Give him accessible stuff that will show him genres, not Queens of the fucking Stone Age.
http://imgur.com/7QwZY.jpg Tommy This will teach OP if he likes rock operas. http://imgur.com/yHJgn.jpg In the Court of the Crimson King This will teach OP if he likes prog (just ignore the 9 minutes of wankery on "Moonchild"). |
Give him accessible stuff.... So you give him King Crimson.

rock is... my god, you need to understand how varied rock is. It's like... God...
"Hey guys, I'm from Mars and I've never head music from Earth, where should I start?" Anyways, looking at the bands you're into, you might like something of the heavier persuasion, with an alternative vibe. There a few bands that pop into my head. Muse Knights of Cydonia- off their album Black Holes and Revalations Metallica - One off of ...And Justice For All - Ride the Lightning off of the album of that name and Nirvana (especially considering they were one of the founders of Grunge- which I've seen Rage Against the Machine and Three Days Grace classified as). - Smells Like Teen Spirit off of Nevermind. Fuck, you've heard this whether you know it or not. - Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam from MTV Unplugged in New York Quote:
- Estranged off of Use Your Illusion II - Sweet Child 'O Mine off of Appetite For Destruction Quote:
- Ride On from Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - Shoot to Thrill from Back in Black @the original post (not just half to the original post and half to the cunning stunt) There are some albums that you're not gonna be able to avoid no matter WHAT type of rock you like. Atleast, for the music lover. Off of the top of my head http://www.amiright.com/album-covers...xperienced.jpg that's all for now, I've been working on this post for... a long time. |

For something older look no further than Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith etc |
Quote:
|
1) AC/DC - Highway To Hell
2) Led Zeppelin - Ledzeppelin IV 3) Nirvana - Nevermind 4) Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R 5) Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley Would be my first 5 to go for. EDIT: Instead of Kyuss, I'd go for The White Stripes - White Blood Cells. |
And, Dave1991, it might help if you listed some of the "underground hip-hop" stuff you're into?
|
(Classic Era stuff)
Led Zeppelin- Any of the first 4 albums Deep Purple- Machine Head Black Sabbath- Master of Reality Aerosmith- Toys in the Attic Fleetwood Mac-Rumours (Post 90`s) Nirvana- Nevermind Soundgarden- Badmotorfinger QOSA- Rated R Strokes- Is This It White Stripes- White Blood Cells All of these albums are highly accessible without being too basic either. All are brief highlights of the rock genre stretching from metal, hard rock, grunge, indie and melodic rock and all are considered amongst the finest works of the said bands. |
Great post by The Bullet.
OctaneHugo you are an idiot. And you took a shot at Queens of the Stone Age... :nono: |

Some recommendations;
Counting Crows - August And Everything After The White Stripes - White Blood Cells The Cure - Disintegration The Pixies - Doolittle Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run All of these are fairly accessible. You've probably even heard a lot of songs from those albums without knowing it already... |
I'll give you a band, album, and recommend two tracks for you from each one.
Some of these have probably already been mentioned but... AC/DC - Back In Black - "You Shook Me All Night Long" and "Shoot To Thrill" Black Sabbath - Paranoid - "Paranoid" and "Electric Funeral" Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction - "Nightrain" and "Paradise City" Korn - Untouchables - "Thoughtless" and "Here To Stay" Godsmack - Faceless - "I ****ing Hate You" and "Make Me Believe" That'll give you a pretty wide variety to start from, without getting into the real heavy stuff. Good luck! |
Superunknown - Soundgarden
Ten - Pearl Jam Led Zeppelin I - Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin II - Led Zeppelin Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine Can't really go wrong here. |

I thought he'd like them cause he said he liked Three Days Grace and Seether.
Also, Godsmack may suck overall, but Faceless is a very good album. |

Badmotorfinger has "Outshined", yeah. But Superunknown has "Black Hole sun", "Fell On Black Days", "Spoonman", and "The Day I Tried to Live".
As far as singles go, I mean. |

i'll most definitely second FAITH NO MORE - ANGEL DUST - absolutely 100% awesome. ****lobber is an epic track. you'll probably also enjoy old Red Hot Chili Peppers, particularly the Mother's Milk album. same with the self-titled Mr. Bungle debut as well as 'Nothing's Shocking' by Jane's Addiction and 'Around the Fur' by the Deftones. |
Elvis Presley ~ The Sun Sessions
The Beatles ~ Rubber Soul The Who ~ Who's Next R.E.M. ~ Murmur Son Volt ~ Trace |

"Jesus Christ Pose" is like one of the heavier songs I've ever heard (Listen to the man wail), and "Rusty Cage" isn't exactly very accessible for the average radio listener.
I'm not knocking Badmotorfinger, I like the album a lot, but it's hardly more accessible and listener friendly than Superunknown. |

They're both classics, yeah. Get both of them.
