After ripping through the first decade of the 21st century brutalizing the modern metal scene, I'd have to say Lamb of God has earned the right to be considered "essential metal"

It would be impossible to decide, especially with the four bands given. Any band that I would mention don't really fit in with those four, even though I would consider them essential. I think Lamb of God is the best modern American band so I will go with them as an essential. If I picked one from Europe I would say In Flames.

The answer is Slayer. They are the best gateway band into the more extreme forms of metal, and I daresay they are the quintessential metal band.
