I personally favor Motley way over Dokken, though I do like some of Dokken's stuff.

I think all the Motley albums from the 80s hold up pretty well, except for maybe Theatre of Pain. The mixing on that album, aside from the singles, isn't the greatest. Its still pretty Motley though.

To me, Motley is glam metal and glam metal is Motley. They represent the genre 100%.

Let's face it, Dokken's only real redeeming quality is Lynch.

You think Aerosmith is one of the greatest rock bands in history? Not to be rude, but... Why? Regardless of if you're judging from skill, influence, image, or even just popularity, they weren't "one of the greatest" rock bands of the 70's, let alone all of history.

And as an aside, John Lennon wrote some of his best work after recognizing how much of his life had been destroyed by his behavior, and attempting to clean up his act. The trend isn't so much that "drugs = good music", rather they destroy people's lives, which gives them a very dark and realistic point of view to write songs from. Saying that hard drugs are awesome based on that is like hearing a song written by a genocide survivor, and shouting "Wooo! Genocide's are awesome, they make for the best songs!"

And lastly, drugs were responsible for Atilla (Billy Joel's Psych/Metal band from his early years).

Let's be realistic here... Van Halen are the hair metal band. They practically invented the genre. They set the trend of "sleazy singer + insanely talented guitarist = money". And if we're talking about the best hair/glam metal band (rather than album, which is why I brought up Dokken's Tooth and Nail), don't forget about "W.A.S.P."! They're just like Motley Crue, but with a male lead singer!
