Dream Theaters' musicianship is excellent. Portnoy, Myung, Petrucci, Jordan Rudess - awesome. James LaBrie's voice, however, makes me want to shoot him in the face.

I'm sorry you can't be talented if you make ****ty music, sure you can have all the technical skill in the world and still not be talented. I hate people who say "I don't like Dream Theater but they are great musicians". No sorry, great musicians make great music, ****ty musicians make ****ty boring music. As such stop saying you don't like this band but they're good musicians. If you don't like it, then by your standards they're not good musicians.

Dream Theater as such have ****ty musicians becuase they make ****ty music.

EDIT: at the end of the day we're still agreeing on the main aspects of their music.

I think what's at the heart of what's annoying about Dream Theater is not necessarily the wankathon, I mean seriously it's prog-metal; what do ya' expect? Rather it's the cliche melodrama that LaBrie gives to the music. The wankfest doesn't help much though.

Now I've not heard this Dream Theater band yet so cant comment on that aspect of your post.

But what the hell are you talking about man?? If people have talent or 'technical skill' as you better put it yourself , they have talent, even if the music its self is not to your taste.
You shouldnt be doing album reviews IMO if thats your attitude towards music.

This is one of the things I learned about music. There are certain artists that I simply dont like but can respect them and realise their talent/influence for example Freddy Mercury- many people say he had the best vocal of all time, which is very quite probable.

In addition, your use of the term '****ty' only stems from your own personal opinion which is harshly used in your ruling that bands have '****' musicians because they make '****ty boring music'.
Ive never heard such a narrow minded, elitist, self centered view!
P.S. & People have the nerve to call me elitist!

What the hell, you shouldn't be doing album reviews if you can't look behind the supposed "talent" if you don't make good music, you have no talent in relation to music. Of course this mainly applies to popular music in general, you can't say the same for classical musicians etc. You should be caring about how good it sounds, not how "technically gifted" the supposed musicians are. There's nothing elitist about it. If you do album reviews and score something higher than your personal opinon think it deserves that's just stupid, if that was teh case each album would get pretty much get the same mark across the board.

Well, thats why I dont do album reviews as I feel it is just easier to tell people my opinion instead of trying to officialise it as a fact, which to me is elitist.

Look when it comes to talent, I dont listen to the 'supposed' talent you hear about via the media etc etc. I listen to the music and make my own mind up.
What Im saying is that just because you dont like a certain artist or band doesnt automatically make them '****'.
Also 'making good music' is only to your taste again and is inconclusive when recognising talent.
Heres another, I dont really like Joe Satriani that much but I can recognise he is an awesome guitarist.

Also you have made the 'exception' for classical music but that is straying from the OP. I ask, why cant you do the same for all music.
Obviously the pop bands/boybands/lame stuff doesnt even need mentioning..

Also I think that if you rated the album higher than your personal opinion then it would be wrong but that is how vain and shallow the reviews are.
Most of them annoy me as they are just published opinions on music, whereas I dont think anybody should have that.

Obviously, at the end of the day it is music but there is more to how 'good' it sounds, there are the lyrics and the meaning behind the music as wel you know.
I wouldnt just listen to a band I didnt liked because I thought they were good technically but I would have a reserve of respect for them.

The best thing you can do when it comes to judging/rating or in your case reviewing music is be able to recognise talent & let your judgement stretch beyond your own personal taste.
