Top 5 Guitar Solos
Hiya metal/rock heads, I did a search to make sure this topic wasn't around yet. I think it would be a good idea to learn of different solos, and see different peoples perspectives on soloing.
1. Randy Rhoades in Ozzy- Crazy train (live) 2. Jimmy Page in Led Zeppelin - Over the Hills and Far Away (live) 3. Mark Knopfler in Dire Straits - The Sultans Of Swing (live) 4. Tim Reynolds with Dave Matthews- #41 (Live on Lost Acoustics) 5. Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun (Live on Band of Gypsies) Runner up.. Van Halen - Eruption PS. This may get heated, if you disagree with someone, please do so respectfully. Cheers mates and sheilas  |
My favorite Hendrix lead might be when he breaks out on All Along the Watchtower. I don't know how many versions of Machine Gun I have in my music collection but they're all brilliant of course. And there's that one before Wild Thing from the Monterey International Pop Festival record where he says(iirc) he's gonna combine the Canadian and American national anthems.
The guitar on Sonic Youth's Pipeline/Kill Time also really appeals to me. I love all the one's you mentioned except Dave Mathews. Zakk Wylde also played deliciously over Crazy Train. Saw it live back in the 80's. My favorite guitar work side by side with Ozzy was certainly done by Tony Iommi. Maybe on War Pigs. For Page with me it's definitely Dazed and Confused live with the bow. I also love Eruption. Great White Heart by a band called Head of David is also really cool. So many of the Slayer leads astonish. Gilmour knocks it out of the park on Comfortably Numb (and so many others). |
Oh yeah, that is great I just bought an 02 CD of Ozzy live at err I cannot recall right now, but zakk wylde plays on it,and he is sick nasty.
If you have not heard the dave and tim song yet, you should listen to it. Try to do so without any predispostions haha. Tim is a musical cevant, I **** you know, he is a god damn genius. |
1.) Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun"
2.) Tom Verlaine's second solo on "Marquee Moon" 3.) Van Halen's solo "Eruption" 4.) Lou Reed's solo from "I Heard Her Call My Name" 5.) Stevie Ray Vaughan's solo from "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" |

Just to chuck some in...... Intro to Mean Street - Eddie Van Halen. Evil Woman - Tony Iommi. Lazy - Ritchie Blackmore/John Lord. You can't have one without the other on this track - 'Kin awesome. Rush - just take your pick. same with Triumph. |

1. Steve Vai-Bad Horsie
2. Freight Train-Nirto 3. Stranglehold Motor City madman Ted Nugent 4. Mr. Crowley-Ozzy 5. Kickstart My Heart-Motley Crue (Talkbox is cool) |
I think comfortably numb solo is overrated. Best David Gilmour solo imo is "Time" from Dark Side.
|
Really don't like Eruption. Eddie just tries to play as many notes as possible as fast as he can. Real solos are like comfortably numb, stairway to heaven, Like a hurricane, sweet child o' mine, highway star, Alive, and some Hendrix songs :D

Many of you have chosen good songs. When people are asked this kind of question they automatically think of known guitarists like Jimmi Hendirx, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Slash and Jeff Beck. What about Rush's Alex Lifeson? You dont often hear his name mentioned in top guitarist list's though he has a very unique way of playing. Just listen to the song La Villa Strangiato. Another one of my favourite guitar solos is from Rage Against the Machine songs. Tom Morello is another one of those guitarists who plays in a way that others dont, and that's what i think makes a good guitarists.

That's why I made this post, to find new guitarists to check out. Not just hear Hendrix over and over again. In all honesty Machine Gun is on my top 5 so I can't say anything lol!! |
Eddie Van Halen - Eruption
Neil Young - Southern Man Eric Clapton - White Room Joe Satriani - Surfing With the Alien Dimebag Darrell - Floods |
These aren't going to be in order, but these are my personal favorite solos. Probably top 5, although there's a good chance I've completely spaced it and forgotten something.
Anyway: Phish - Horn This really may be one of the most beautiful solos I've ever heard in my life, if not the most beautiful. It's really one of those solos I can legitimately feel, very very deeply. Very emotional, wonderful, damn near perfect. Close your eyes and listen; it is lovely. Richard Thompson - Gethsemane This is another solo that I believe to be very emotive. It's not especially long, as far as solos go, but it fits the song perfectly, seems to be a continuation of the story RT is telling. Wonderful solo. Queen - White Queen (As It Began) One of my favorite things that Brian May has ever played. Simply lovely. The Who - Love Reign O'er Me It's probably been apparent that I've been selecting my top 5 solos based on the superb emotive quality of each, not necessarily even going for the most technically "proficient" by a given artist. Then again, I think emotional impact is as good a reason as any to love a piece of music, so I'll stand by it, and I'll stand by this solo. Jimi Hendrix - A Merman I Should Turn To Be Beautiful. |

no one will agree with me but i like the solo of "Queen/The Invisible Man". it well expresses the theme of the song itself. i mean, i don know how to explain, but kinda "program music"? the opposite of "absolute music".

Queen are absolutely one of my favorite bands of all time. I probably know more useless knowledge about Queen than I do about Phish, to be quite honest.
A lot of people I've known to completely discount any of Queen's artistic merit are people who haven't heard more than just the hits, and think "Bohemian Rhapsody" are as experimental as the band's sound got. While I don't necessarily agree with "The Invisible Man" as having one of the greatest solos of all time (if you want a weird one by Queen I find underrated, check out "Scandal") but it doesn't really get the credit it deserves either. In my opinion, I suppose. |

Whereas on the other hand Brian May does not. He was and is one of my favorite guitarists. Also I saw him on the Cream reuinion DVD rocking out, so he gained even more respect from me for that. Being humble, and digging other peoples music plays a big factor into whether or not I can respect/like you as an artist. |
I saw Brian May play nine rows away from me. Paid something like $150 for the ticket, then money to get to and from Cleveland (5+ hours) and a hotel in the city.
Definitely worth it. Brian May is legitimately one of my idols. Lyrically, he was actually superior to Freddie Mercury - in my opinion, anyway - but so few of his songs were released by the band as singles, no one seems to care. Poor Bri. |
I love the solo in We Will Rock You.
|
Jimmy Page's Heartbreaker solo is godly.
Hell, my top 100 solos = Page. |
