A lot of Melodic and Death metal here.

My favorites have been mostly been mentioned...
Disturbed
Children of Bodom
Kalmah
Opeth
Electric Wizard
Machine Head (1992, not so modern)
Dethklok (Gotta love Dethklok)
In Flames (Early stuff)
System of A Down

I would agree, although I'm not real big on SOAD like I used to be. I don't know much about Kalmah either.

I must admit when you said "emo singing" I laughed REALLY hard. Not only does the singing sound nothing even close to emo, but the content of the songs isn't emo either. At all. Seriously, what are you saying? Most of the lyrics (which are my main problem with the band) are basic "pump up" type lyrics, like those in Pantera's "Walk". As for the metalcore thing I don't see it at all, and the bands you listed to compare gave absolutely no justice to your argument at all. If 5FDP is derivative of anything, it is from Pantera or any other groove metal band. They remind me of a less-good and more melodic Lamb of God.

This sums up 5FDP perfectly and like DevilDriver they are light-weights and inferior versions of Lamb of God imo.

I`ve always said that Lamb of God in terms of style and talent were the Pantera of the 00`s.

Killadelphia rocks. One of best recent live albums I've heard.

Along with Hellalive by Machine Head two of the best live metal albums of the 00`s.

LOLPOCALYPSE 05-26-2011 05:43 PM

Is Killedelphia good? A friend told me he didn't think it sounded good because it was in a small venue or something. I will give it a look.

Never listen to him again.

A few bands that tip their hat to Metal bands past but have enough individuality to separate them from the endless Metalcore bands out there.A few bands that have stood out for me over the last 10- 15 years:

Gojira
Hacride
Cobalt
Akercocke
Agalloch
Triptykon
Intronaut
Opeth
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Earth

I could mention bands like Maudlin Of The Well, Grails and Kayo Dot but their sound is not always strictly Metal.

Metal Connoisseur 05-27-2011 04:29 PM

Akercocke....spooky

Classified as Blackened Death Metal? Like a Goatwhore or something to that effect?

Their singing style is derivative of every other metalcore, melodic metalcore, post-hardcore, melodic death metal, or whatever the hell the bands want to call themselves. The fact that it's not quite as whiny or teenager sounding as Panic at the Disco does not strike me as a significant difference.

Emo for rednecks.

So because As I Lay Dying or whoever have elements of their sound that differentiate them SOMEWHAT from the ****tiest of the ****ty bands, they are completely different?

Any similarities are shallow. They put a sheen of groove on their metalcore theivery.

What do you think emo is exactly? Anything melancholic? Anything negative? Any type of melody mixed with vocals? I don't understand how you could possibly compare 5FDP to Panic at the Disco. You are right that 5FDP isn't whiny. AT ALL. And they don't have any emo themes in their songs. So you aren't making any progress there. The fact that you thought you could throw metalcore, melodic metalcore, melodic death metal, and post hardcore in the same boat shows how little knowledge you have of these genres and probably music in general. The only sub genre you mentioned that contains any emo themes is post-hardcore, and even then it doesn't pervade that entire sub genre. I will admit that 5FDP does take some elements from metalcore. They use guitars. And the band is made up of live humans.

And of course after seeing your ignorant "emo for rednecks" statement I won't give you any more of my attention.

I watched it and it was excellent. My friend said he would watch it again too. He thinks he didn't like it because he watch a poor quality youtube version.

Nah, Akercocke are unlike any other blackened death metal band, their music is so atmospheric. The mental image I get when listening is something like being in an abandoned lunatic asylum, and this is what sort of stuff your mind would come up with.

The mental image I came up with after viewing the music video for "Leviathan" was that of Marquis de Sade doing what he does best. I suppose that is what the band wanted me to think of, well done

Metal Connoisseur 08-15-2011 03:13 PM

A friend of mine showed me this band from Holland today, they incorporate a myriad of styles into their sound, but if you really wanted to pigeonhole their sound I guess you could call it djent with a mix of groove? Idk just listen and respond.

supermarlin 08-15-2011 11:35 PM

Might throw up a couple of Thrash Revival bands for though, Municipal Waste, Gama Bomb, Evile, SSS, Toxic Holocaust are all good.

Howard the Duck 08-15-2011 11:47 PM

mostly into Isis, Neurosis, Krallice, Torche, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Pig Destroyer, Coalesce, Converge and Baroness at the mo'

I actually think City of Evil is a great album.

LOLPOCALYPSE 08-18-2011 07:09 AM

I only think A7X's first album is good

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 08-22-2011 12:20 AM

Has somebody mentioned Psychofagist. They're ****ing fantastic.

Brax Brizoo 08-22-2011 11:47 PM

The Black Dahlia Murder, for me anyway. I realize this is an unpopular opinion in the metal community. I've never really understood the hate, but anyway!

Mastodon... Decapitated, Cannabis Corpse.. as well.

Then of course some of the thrash revival groups that have been mentioned above. Specifically Evile, Toxic Holocaust and Gama Bomb for me. Also a black metal band that I enjoy a lot; Ceremonial Castings, is pretty modern. It's good stuff.

Howard the Duck 08-23-2011 12:35 AM

there is a band called "Cannabis Corpse"?

i would really like to check them out

More of an oldschool death metal sound, but they have their own twist to it I'd say.

Check out their album Tubes of the Resinated, if you're interested. Their newest is pretty good too, but I'd definitely recommend starting with that album. I consider them better than Cannibal Corpse, myself lol. Not real similar in sound though.

Necromancer 08-27-2011 05:16 PM

I'm looking forward to Five Finger Death Punch 3rd album "American Capitalist", set for release on October 11, 2011. Five Finger Death Punch will embark on their "Share the Welt" tour from October 16 – November 2, 2011 with support from All That Remains, Hatebreed and Rev Theory.

If you're looking for something similar to that you should check out the band Acid Bath, they're one of the big influences in Mastodon's sound. I'd recommend their second album Paegan Terrorism Tactics (1996). It's mostly clean vocal (the guttural vocals can be a huge turn off for a lot of people), and isn't so heavy that it feels like it's physically assaulting you, yet still heavy enough to headbang to. If you're into macabre you'll also get a kick out of the lyrics which can be very tongue-in-cheek.

YorkeDaddy 09-04-2011 10:01 AM

Well, Mastodon seems to be a popular band among all of you, and for good reason. They are excellent.

And I need to mention Machine Head...screw you if you disagree. The Blackening is the best metal album of all time.

Howard the Duck 09-04-2011 10:09 AM

i quite like Agalloch as well, recommended to me by a poster who's MIA at the mo'

supermarlin 09-05-2011 12:02 AM

Machine Head are quality.

If you already knew than why make a "Best Metal Album" thread at all?

I must say 5FDP's new single was pretty awful
