Black Metal!

**** Metalcore, **** Deathcore. I'm talking about black metal.
Burzum
Immortal
Darkthrone
Mayhem.
Real, grim, lo-fi aesthetics and a big middle finger to christianity. Post your favourite Black Metal acts, and discuss the music/ movement.

Zamyotov 06-12-2011 04:31 AM

Peste Noire is really good; French black metal that covers a range of styles over four albums (two of which are essentially jokes, purposefully made to sound bad). I would recommend listening to Ballade ****re lo Anemi Francor, or La Sanie des Siècles - Panégyrique de la Dégénérescence, the first album.

Windir is my favourite black metal artist, and even though he didn't make the low fi, anti Christian, juvenile delinquent type of music you're asking for it's definitely worth a listen. Black metal with folk elements, Norwegian. Any album is good, but I recommend Arntor Ein Windir first.

I was going to include samples, but I seem to need to make a few more posts before I can do so. However search up the title track to Ballad ****re by Peste Noire, and Journy to the End by Windir.

Zamyotov 06-12-2011 04:39 AM

And try out Nattestid Ser Porten Vid - Taake.

zeppy111 06-13-2011 07:42 AM

I definitely agree with the above post, Windir and Peste Noire are both crazy good bands.

Some of my favourite acts lately:
Drudkh (champions of black metal)
Kroda
Altar Of Plagues
Ameseours
Paysage d'Hiver
Mortifera
Alcest
Moonsorrow
ect...

Zamyotov 06-13-2011 12:57 PM

I was going to recommend Alcest's demo Tristesse Hivernale as exactly what OP seemed to be looking for; Alcest had some other good stuff too, but nowadays they (he?) don't exactly play black metal.

supermarlin 06-13-2011 04:45 PM

Alcest's two LP's are far greater than any black metal.

Zamyotov 06-13-2011 06:00 PM

No lol, don't stupid up this thread please.

supermarlin 06-13-2011 06:48 PM

Lol, you're the silly one. Shoegaze music is far more introspective than black metal, no matter how atmospheric it is.

Zamyotov 06-13-2011 08:49 PM

I'm silly for discussing black metal in a black metal thread?...

supermarlin 06-14-2011 01:01 AM

...maybe...(lol, of course not)

Rick Deckard 06-14-2011 06:55 AM

Not a big fan of Alcest. Les Discrets do it so much better. And I don't really like Windir either. Atmospheric BM has its place, like with Vhernen and Totalselfhatred's Debut, but a lot of the time you need some ****ed up the ass pregnant with ****ing riffs BM.

That's not to say I don't enjoy Negura Bunget a **** tonne. Drudkh are pretty silly, imho, but I love Altar of Plagues. They really hit their stride with the latest effort.

Zamyotov 06-14-2011 03:34 PM

Maybe music just isn't for you buddy.

DoctorSoft 06-14-2011 07:15 PM

This is what's up.

Rick Deckard 06-15-2011 03:11 AM

Ana 06-15-2011 04:03 PM

Limbonic Art, Immortal, Mayhem, Dimmu Borgir.

Crowley 06-30-2011 07:42 AM

Mayhem
Graveworm
Darkthrone
Diaboli

and who dousn't just adore Gorgoroth

Metal Connoisseur 07-01-2011 10:38 AM

Could anyone recommend some similar artists in the Black Metal genre who are similar to Alcest and Agalloch? I find Alcest's shoegaze/black metal hybrid to be brilliant. I've been meaning to check out Deathspell Omega (idk if their sound is similar to the two mentioned above). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm just starting to listen to them, but Blut Aus Nord might be up your alley if you like shoegaze black metal. They have a very avant-garde-what-the-****-is-that-supposed-to-be kinda style.

I will check them out. What's the consensus on Wolves in the Throneroom?

I've only recently started really getting into black metal, so I have no expert opinion, but i thought that Wolves In the Throneroom were pretty awesome.

Dimmu Borgir are my favourite black metal band.

*sigh*

METALLICA_RULES 07-05-2011 06:31 AM

Oh c'mon, at least I didn't say Cradle Of Filth.

supermarlin 07-05-2011 07:08 AM

Props for not saying Cradle of Filth.

Metal Connoisseur 07-05-2011 07:20 AM

I actually don't mind Dimmu Borgir. Haven't like plowed through the discog or anything but I've heard some stuff off of In Sorte Diaboli and it wasn't awful. The clean singing on "The Serpentine Offering" is actually pretty cool to me.

supermarlin 07-05-2011 07:24 AM

Yeah, that's the one thing from Dimmu that I LOVE. The clean falsetto's add so much to the songs.

teamventure 07-05-2011 08:48 PM

what about emperor? do you black metal brahs consider them legit?

Metal Connoisseur 07-05-2011 09:10 PM

Im no expert, but I've always been under the idea that Emperor are considered essential black metal

word..

Metal Connoisseur 07-05-2011 10:02 PM

I can respect them for eventually maturing enough to ditch the corpse paint but musically they don't really do anything for me. I take my black metal chased with some other genre of music, definitely not straight.

i like nightside eclipse. as for corpse paint, i never understood its appeal.

METALLICA_RULES 07-05-2011 10:34 PM

While I don't like Varg's views, his music is actually pretty good.

supermarlin 07-06-2011 07:13 AM

I can't stand Varg's music and his views suck. But for some reason he's incredibly interesting.

METALLICA_RULES 07-06-2011 07:18 AM

Well, I'm not that into Black Metal, but I found his music alright for Black Metal. He is indeed interesting.

Howard the Duck 07-06-2011 07:37 AM

i've only listened to Emperor and Darkthrone

both are pretty great

word up!

Metal Connoisseur 07-06-2011 09:52 AM

The whole culture of Black Metal I find to be interesting even though I'm not a big fan of music itself. I've been meaning to watch a documentary called "Until the Light Takes Us" which is a documentary concerning the whole scene in Norway during the early 90's. Darkthrone's "Transylvanian Hunger" to me is old school black metal in a nutshell. Low production value, excessive tremolo picking, and indecipherable screeched vocals.
