The Cure
Christian Death
Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees
Sex Gang Children
Southern Death Cult
Alien Sex Fiend
Virgin Prunes
The Mission
The Sisters of Mercy

Obviously these would be considered the best due to the fact that they where the architects of the genre back in the 80’s.

The Awakening is currently my favorite modern Goth Rock band.

If you're looking for something more "Gothic" than the post-punk movement of the 80's, best look into Gothic Metal.

Beat me to it, seriously amazing band. I think most of the big hitters in Goth Rock are great bands though. Red Lorry Yellow Lorry deserve a mention too.

I have tickets to see The Mission, Fields of the Nephilim, Gene loves Jezebel and Sisters of Mercy in October and November respectively in London this year. Well chuffed.

Hey James have you heard these? Many members of various bands (Nephilim, All About Eve, Pink Floyd's engineer etc). Not exactly original but loving that nephilim-esque guitar sound.

Type O Negative. Well, they're Gothic Metal, but they deserve an honourable mention imo.

My favorites are Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Love and Rockets, The Cult(if they count), and the like.

Gun Club are great!

I would also like to throw in Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. The first two albums (Talk About the Weather and Paint Your Wagon) plus the singles from 84-87 are all solid although I still like a lot of their Nothing Wrong-Blow era as well.
