Bohemian Rhapsbody vs Stairway to Heaven

Personally I prefer the Bohemiem but.. Im curious to see what others think is the best, I know both of these songs have been contenders for the best song in the 20th century so.. what you guys think is best?

captaincaptain 06-29-2011 11:27 PM

I go with the song that's spelled correctly...seriously though, Bohemian Rhapsody is better just for the sheer grandeur of the song.

Howard the Duck 06-30-2011 12:30 AM

both are pompous as shit

no anal beads?

Surell 06-30-2011 12:31 AM

I'd take Stairway; it builds perfectly in every aspect, and i'm more of a Zeppelin fan.

METALLICA_RULES 06-30-2011 12:49 AM

Most certainly Stairway To Heaven.

Howard the Duck 06-30-2011 01:21 AM

from the spelling of the song from the poll and OP, it is already clear which song the thread-starter prefers

Guybrush 06-30-2011 03:50 AM

Since I've never heard a song called Bohemiem Rhapsbody, I feel Stairway to Heaven is really the only alternative.

Unknown Soldier 06-30-2011 03:55 AM

Led Zep were always in a different league to Queen musically, but Stairway to Heaven is a vastly overrated song and one of my least favourites from them, whereas BR is one of the few Queen songs that I really like.

Guybrush 06-30-2011 03:59 AM

Both are good songs, but I'm ten times more tired of Bohemian Rhapsody than I am of Stairway to Heaven. If I was making a rock mix CD to listen to while I drive and had to choose between the two, I definetly would've gone for Stairway ;)

Why not listen to both, the roads are long in Norway;)

lol yeah I figured that as well.

I had to go with Bohemian Rhapsody

Stairway just can't hold a candle to it imo.

If I wanted to get the Led out....I much prefer listening to Immigrant Song or Kashmir.

Howard the Duck 06-30-2011 05:53 AM

if push comes to shove, i'd say both songs are overplayed and i'm pretty sick of both

a fairer deal would be "Heartbreaker" vs "Stone Cold Crazy"

I'd take Heartbreaker.

idk heartbreaker but I've always loved Stone Cold Crazy

starrynight 06-30-2011 06:46 AM

Bohemian Rhapsody, and I think it's generally known more too. It isn't just 'rock', it's really seen as a great pop song.

Crowley 06-30-2011 07:14 AM

Bohemian Rhapsody

TheCunningStunt 06-30-2011 07:55 AM

They're both contenders for being the worst thing in the history of things being things.

Necromancer 06-30-2011 09:25 AM

Both are timeless classics that I don't really care listening to anymore, so both win.

This. Both are good songs, but I've also heard each of them so many times in my life that I'd be perfectly happy to never hear them again.

[MERIT] 06-30-2011 12:55 PM

I've gotta go with Stairway To Heaven. Both are over-played and overrated, but that's not their fault.

Freebase Dali 06-30-2011 12:59 PM

Stairway to Heaven.
I can't stand anything that reminds me of Wayne's World.

Dazed and Confused & Whole Lotta Love > Immigrant Song & Kashmir. Or at least Immigrant Song. But I guess that's more of a Zeppelin thread debate.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-01-2011 04:16 PM

I'd rather listen to all 18 and a half minutes of Can's Halleluhwah than ever hear both these songs ever again.

What about 45 minutes of Metal Machine Music?

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-01-2011 04:29 PM

I could just live next to a factory & experience that album 24 hours a day for nothing.

Halluhwah is pretty easy listening

try Peking O or Augmn

William Zanzinger 07-01-2011 05:54 PM

The only thing wrong with "Stairway" is the lyrics-(and I seriously love Zep).
Later Zep songs-"Kashmir" or even "Nobody`s fault but mine" were much better.
Lyrically, earlier songs like "Immigrant Song" or "That`s the way" were also superior.
Queen went rapidly downhill from "Rhapsody"-witness **** like "Fat bottom Girls" or "We are the Champions"

I love "Fat Bottomed Girls", "Bicycle Races" as well

"We are the Champions" is good if heard in the proper context of the album

TheNiceGuy 07-01-2011 06:28 PM

A very hard choice here as the're both excellent multi-segment songs but I'll go with Stairway because the guitar solo is better.

Best songs of the 20th century? Seriously? They are iconic and have their own merits but nowhere near the best songs.

Does anyone ever step outside their comfort zone or at least try to listen to many genres of music?

Raust 07-01-2011 07:29 PM

Interesting choice of songs. Both are very iconic, but very different. They both have progression, however the styles are very different. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody is a bit more proggier and Stairway to Heaven shows a similar progression without the over emphasized opera qualities Freddy has on his vocals. Instead it's more hard rock driven. Stairway to Heaven also sounds very similar to the Spirit song Taurus which was released before Stairway was even composed. Spirit also toured with Zeppelin and Zeppelin has even covered a few of there songs. Despite Stairway sounding similar to Taurus it still holds amazing musicanship and progression throughout the song. Stairway, I think stairway is the answer I prefer that song.

So in ANY context are the words "We are the champions, my friend. And we`ll keep on fighting till the end" going to appear deep, meaningful and relevant to anyone`s life?
It`s football chant, Gary Glitter material
Likewise "Fat bottom girls, you make the rocking world go round. Get on your bikes and ride!"

sometimes you have to let the cheesiness of the lyrics seep into the overall feel of the song

not every lyric need to be ponderous and meaningful

i mean i find something like "Jeffrey Dahmer, commits gruesome murder" to be good in its context (cheesy thrash metal) - Soulfly's song, in case you wanna know

William Zanzinger 07-01-2011 07:43 PM

"sometimes you have to let the cheesiness of the lyrics seep into the overall feel of the song"

So by that reasoning, something like "Save your kisses for me" is the perfect rock lyric?
Brotherhood of Man, in case you wanna know.

huh? I like stuff like "Dancing Queen" just fine

get out of your Christgau tunnel

William Zanzinger 07-01-2011 07:51 PM

Well....rock on.

plushzilla 07-01-2011 10:51 PM

The Bohemian Rhapsbody had the depths to transcend religion and touched a lot of heart with the passage of time; it still holds the flames to keep the young hearts flowing through while Stairway to Heaven had the spiritual quality to it making the listener look in wards as well as outwards.
Personally I would not dare to choose one over the other as they both had move in different ways.

transcend religion like, how? it's not even a religious song

Stairway to Heaven is spiritual like how? it may have "Heaven" in its title but it talks nothing about the spirit

Electrophonic Tonic 07-01-2011 11:08 PM

When you can accuse a song of being more exposed and overplayed than Stairway to Heaven... that's pretty bad.

Maybe it's my Led Zeppelin bias showing through... but I'll go with Stairway to Heaven
