Extremism Before 1992, Community Participation Requested

Quote:

**** man. We need more posts for these dm pioneers.
Mondo Bungle said this in thread on "Death", and I agree - however, I think limiting it to death metal is a bit strange, as the various subgenres had yet to branch out enough to where there were obvious & distinct differences.

Now, we can argue about whether these earlier bands and albums are still relevant or as good as current releases, but the fact is these groups tend to be forgotten. As metal websites tend to focus on reviewing new releases, and as most metal fans aren't as fortunate as Jackhammer to have been there when it happened, we tend to be myopic and focus on the recent past and the new. So, I think the community coming together and discussing these earlier groups would be helpful, and just a little bit of fun.

So, what I'd like to do is ask that people post their top 10 favorite "extreme" releases from up until 1992 (so, releases from 1992 are ok, but none later). They can be from any of the "extreme" genres, whether crossover, death metal, thrash, black metal, harcore, grindcore, whatever - if you think it qualifies as extreme, it can be put in your list.

The concept is simple; a week from today (July 22nd), I'll tally up the lists. Lists are going to be weighted in a simplistic manner, a #1 is worth "10 points", a #"10" worth 1 point, and so on. The ten albums that get the most points will be put together in a sort of super list, to serve future newbs and genre explorers on this site.

================================================== ===============

So, the last chance to participate has already come and gone. But, if you're curious about the results, I've put them in this post for ease of browsing. The rest of the thread is neat, too, what with people carrying on the great metal tradition of **** talking others lists.

Great idea for a thread, maybe as an idea it could be just one artist as well, to stop people choosing 2 or 3 albums by the same band.

Death- Leprosy (4)
Morbid Angel- Covenant (3)
Celtic Frost- Morbid Tales (6)
Bathory- Blood Fire Death (8)
Sepultura- Arise (1)

Yeah, I've been tabulating to take account of that thus far. Worse case scenario, I can present the results both ways - per album and per artist. (EDIT) I guess I just prefer the album method so as to make discovering this music easier for future members & explorers.

The Batlord 07-16-2011 09:21 AM

ARG! I keep changing my mind and editing my answers.

1. Slayer - Reign In Blood
2. Slayer - Hell Awaits

4. Celtic Frost - Into the Pandemonium
5. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness

8. Sepultura - Arise
9. Venom - Black Metal
10. Napalm Death - Utopia Banished

jackhammer 07-19-2011 07:04 PM

The problem I have here is actually ordering them into a top ten in order for points to be awarded.

So I will post albums and then add the running order in the next couple of days if that's OK?

I have not really gone for many typical faves as it is pretty obvious what many of those albums did for the genre but there was a huge amount of albums that straddled a few extreme genres and managed to appease fans from conflicting genres.

Infest - Slave
Crucifix - Dehumanization
Napalm Death - Scum
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
Void - Potion For Bad Dreams
Bathory - Under The Sign Of The Black Mark
Ministry - The Land Of Rape And Honey
Autopsy - Severed Survival
Blind Illusion - The Sane Asylum
Celtic Frost - Into The Pandemonium
Mordred - Fool's Game
Killing Joke - Debut
Ludichrist - Immaculate Deception
Agnostic Front - Cause For Alarm
Obituary - Slowly We Rot
Discharge - Hear Nothing...
Septic Death - Now That I Have Your Attention
Crumbsuckers - Life Of Dreams
Corrosion Of Conformity - Tecnocracy
Agnostic Front - Cause For Alarm
Venom - Black Metal
St. Vitus Dance- S.T
Kreator - Pleasure To Kill
Morbid Saint - Spectrum Of Death
Sabbat - Dreamweaver
S.O.D - Speak English Or Die
D.R.I - 4 of a Kind
Death Angel - The Ultra Violence
Nuclear Assault - Game Over
Prong - Beg To Differ
Carcass - Symphonies Of Sickness
Repulsion - Horrified

In order, or you can put tags next to them to indicate the order. The idea is the lists are weighted.

ok will edit my previous post.

Engine 07-20-2011 06:27 PM

Since I did it wrong -- and hip hop bunny seems really concerned with rules .. I'll put this as my number 6:

6. Autopsy: Severed Survival

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...dL._SS300_.jpg

As for Wolverine Blues .. just discard it if you want. I'm not removing it. I'm sure Entombed were working on it pre-1993 and I like it too much to reject.

BastardofYoung 07-20-2011 08:01 PM

first 2 albums were better than "Wolverine Blues" anyways.

For Autopsy I would also go with "Mental Funeral".

Engine 07-20-2011 08:14 PM

I don't think anybody asked you about your opinion of my choices.
I posted my favorite albums by Entombed and Autopsy. I'd apologize that you don't agree if I cared but I don't. So I won't.
:p:

BastardofYoung 07-20-2011 08:17 PM

no, it means just that. If I were asked I would go with "Mental Funeral" over "Severed Survival".

I would never consider "Wolverine Blues" all that much of an extreme release, first 2 I would, especially "Left Hand Path", which is their masterpeice still. I stand by that one.

Engine 07-20-2011 08:25 PM

Bastard, I think the question is which albums are our favorites.
My favorites aren't necessarily the most ExtremE.

BastardofYoung 07-20-2011 08:25 PM

need another 10 as well.

1. Autopsy - Mental Funeral (1991)
2. Convulse - World Without God (1991)
3. Carnage - Dark Recollections (1990)
4. Pestilence - Consuming Impulse (1989)
5. Aspyhx - The Rack (1991)

BastardofYoung 07-20-2011 09:36 PM

I know how ya feel.., Would nominate Dissection, but they didnt come out til 93.

hip hop bunny hop 07-20-2011 10:07 PM

Heh, if anything I was too late with the cut off date... note all the early 90s stuff on here.

Besides, the last few years, I've been convinced the most interesting extreme releases were the inchoate ones when the genres were still forming and the metal bands were still taking cues from the best of hardcore & crossover.

Engine 07-20-2011 10:41 PM

1988 probably would have worked for me.

hip hop bunny hop 07-21-2011 10:50 PM

Even though only 10 people participated, I take this as proof that we collectively have the best taste in the world.
