Im gonna go for Stevie Nicks, but I had a huge debate with my mother over this.. I honestly think Stevie Nicks is the best, what about you guys?

[MERIT] 07-15-2011 10:43 PM

Janis Joplin by a f*cking mile.

Necromancer 07-15-2011 11:19 PM

Annie Lennox, Patty Smyth, Bonnie Raitt, Sade, and Anita Baker are the first ones that come to mind that I like personally whatever genre.

I think Joplin is overrated, as far as being "A Great Rock Vocalist". She did have a very unique voice though.

hmm to me she is awesome ~ so much soul... not many female singers evoke such emotion for me ... IMO not overrated at all. If anything under-rated in terms of exposure to younger generations...

but am a fan of blondie too

Nosferatu Man 07-17-2011 08:42 PM

I am really quite a massive fan of Grace Slick, but it has to be Janis

Grace Slick without a doubt, she always had a powerful unique voice.

Johnnette Napolitano.

I think I'd probably have Patti Smith in ahead of one of the latter two but that's a pretty damn fine top four.

Dont you mean Patty Smyth? (just kidding)

Oh..I forgot to mention, That Van Halen actually offered Patty Smyth the position as lead vocalist before asking Sammy Hagar, she graciously and (obviously) refused the offer.

teamventure 07-19-2011 10:42 PM

i believe tarja turunen deserves a mention. her voice is oh so captivating.

I like a lot of the singers mention like Janis Joplin, Lennie Annox, & Stevie Nicks. I know most people gravitate to strong loud voices e.g. John Mayer called Hayley Williams "The great orange hope." When she screams imo it sounds like her voice go flat. So I like regular singings with good technique but who don't hot dog it all the time.

My pick is Chrissie Hynde, she has a nice soft voice she sings with a lot of emotion and has good vibrato. She can do both ballads with a sentimental touch and she belt out a rock song too. And imo you can say the same thing about Stevie Nicks.

Unknown Soldier 07-20-2011 02:31 AM

Also nobody`s mentioned Kate Bush, surely one of the most distinctive sounding female artists ever.

Stephen 07-20-2011 07:12 AM

PJ Harvey

I agree she has an exceptional voice, but she's not really a rock vocalist.

Can't say that I know a lot of good female rock vocalists, so I'll have to go with Stevie Nicks.

Strayed 07-21-2011 02:34 PM

PJ Harvey 4 shore.

I`m surprised nobody has mentioned them either, considering "Dreamboat Annie" often gets mentioned in various greatest hard rock album lists.

Scissorman 07-26-2011 11:54 AM

Certainly not even close to being the best female rock vocalist, but still my favorite

I always associate the Wilson sisters as being with "Heart" more so than as solo artist. That could be one reason they've not (until now) been mentioned. One of the best female rock band no doubt. And vocalist if so desired.

My vote is still for Patty Smyth & Annie Lennox.

jackhammer 07-26-2011 07:19 PM

I cannot put Annie Lennox down as a rock vocalist and neither can I put Kate Bush down either. Nothing to do with their vocals at all but it's a whole different kettle of fish really and they are much more subtle and not genre specific.

Lennox is actually labled in the pop, rock, blue-eyed soul, & R&B genres, but I agree her music contains much more than a basic rock influence/sound. Her style & sound is quite unique musically. I would consider her music to be more contemporary & alternative, than labeled in the basic rock genre. I might mention that she is one of my favorite Scottish artist along with the Average White Band.

I would consider Patty Smyth of (Scandal) to be a more rock genre specific artist.

Not familiar with one of the greatest artist/vocalists ever to walk the earth? Shame on you! Modern female singer songwriters wouldn't exist without Kate Bush. Sure you would still have great vocalists but she represented the whole package (and still does) for a complete package- vocals, writing, lyrics, album art and instrumentation.

I will add Patti Smith to that paragraph too.

She is in her 50's now and still is ****ing gorgeous.

Is Kate Bush more R&B & Soul?

Kate Bush only makes an album once every 4 years on average. She rarely tours and is eccentric to the core. She is also highly regarded in musicians circles as one of the finest female vocalists ever. I don't think I have ever read one negative opinion from other musicians about her work. Ever.

I find that Art rock, progressive, & alternative rock are her specific genre classification (wki). I might actually prefer Kate Bush over Janis Joplin to be honest.:p:

Hey you don`t know Kate Bush! Without doubt one of the most gifted female artists to have ever walked the Earth. Her first 5 albums released between 1978-1985 are a must. I find her one of the most captivating artists ever.

Guybrush 07-27-2011 04:15 AM

I would vote my support for Kate Bush if only I thought rock singer was a good description. She certainly can be a rock singer and, according to her biography, wanted to do more rockier stuff after her debut only it didn't end up that way on her studio recordings much. Here's an example of a rockier Kate :

But excluding her from my mental list, I might have to voice some support to Ann Wilson from Heart, if only because I like quite a bit of their music. :)

Awesome!

And I would also agree that Janis Joplin along with her band is overrated.

Lisnaholic 07-27-2011 08:11 AM

Some nice Kate Bush clips here, but I`m surprised no-one has mentioned Sonja Kristina yet.
Well, I guess Sonia`s also more prog than straight out rock. She may not be the best, but she won a lot of admirers with songs like this, which she co-wrote in 1970 :-

Lord Dweedle 08-03-2011 12:52 PM

Just listening to Janis Joplin for the first time... im tempted to revoke my original choice & say Janis Joplin..

blastingas10 08-08-2011 03:42 PM

Youre just listening to Janis for the first time? I bet youre being blown away. I'd say Janis Joplin and Grace slick. Can i count Aretha Franklin? I guess she was more R&B, but i think she fits into the category of early rock n roll. Also, Allison Mosshart is one of the best today in my opinion.
