well, i'll be.

Cheers.

BastardofYoung 02-20-2012 02:53 PM

where is the winners thread. I wanna see who beat me, haha.

BastardofYoung 02-20-2012 03:13 PM

I read through it, I know you voted me for best new member.

However, I do not expect to win, lots more who contribute more than I do who deserve it. But the nomination is appreciated.

I imagine being nominated and getting beat by Jethro Tull or something.

Yep you were beaten by Howard the Duck (Il Duce) he's the Jethro Tull of MB.

BastardofYoung 02-20-2012 03:20 PM

That name always makes me think of that god awful movie. I know it was a comic first, but that movie is dreadful.

I always think of the Duck Tits.

BastardofYoung 02-20-2012 03:28 PM

but guess I shall do something on topic now, before this turns into the new random thread:

been on a Finnish Death Metal spree again recently. Some of my favorites as of late:

a band that only released 2 demos. But both demos were great, mid paced stuff.

another band with a limited output. Probably know to some as the band that came before Amorphis. Though only having one member who would go onto that group. Releasing a demo and one EP.

One of my favorite Finnish bands, this is the only with the true Finnish sound.

Unknown Soldier 02-20-2012 03:37 PM

Talking of Finland and I know its more melodic death in style, but I'm giving Amorphis and Tales From A Thousand Lakes another listen.

Unknown Soldier 02-20-2012 03:37 PM

great song.

BastardofYoung 02-20-2012 03:40 PM

Yep, listened to that album the other day. Doesn't hold up quite as well as I remember it, but is still a highly enjoyable record with more doom influences than the debut... which was more heavy on the Death Metal from what I remember.

But I still love first 3 albums by Amorphis. Elegy was actually the first one I heard, and though not a Death Metal release, still highly enjoyable in its own right.

BastardofYoung 02-20-2012 03:42 PM

listening to Demigod's "Slumber of Sullen Eyes" again now. Still a great album to me.

They also released what I would say is the best Death Metal demo of all-time.

The first four Amorphis albums go from death metal to melodic death metal with doom, folk metal and finally onto a more straight up metal/hard rock sound, whilst most of the time being progressive as well. They did a lot on four albums.

BastardofYoung 02-20-2012 04:00 PM

was watching this video again:

kinda funny vocally at times, but yet still great. Out of all the old school bands to make their return recently, I still think Autopsy was the best of the bunch. "Macabre Eternal" was a great full length. Though not on the level as "Mental Funeral", still a great release in its own right.

The video is a song taken from the "The Tomb Within" EP... which I think was more a stopgag EP released to tide people over tilt he full length came out.

The Batlord 02-21-2012 12:46 PM

I've grown to seriously love the Finnish death metal scene. They had some of the most diverse bands of any scene. They seemed to take the Swedish sound and update it.

BastardofYoung 02-21-2012 12:51 PM

Yeah, they have a unique sound, that I can not really put into words or pin point just what it is.... but I like it.

I do love Swedish as well though.

Listened to this EP recently again, and still enjoyed it:

It's like what Florida death metal would have been, had they not become so obsessed with technicality.

hip hop bunny hop 02-21-2012 01:14 PM

Are you guys familiar with Sarco***us? I believe they're the first metal band to come out of Finland; their sound on "Cycle of Life" is something like the first two Judas Priest albums with a psychedelic bent. It's fun, and the sound certainly sticks with you - although much of the song writing is quite weak.

Metal Connoisseur 02-26-2012 02:36 PM

Ulcerate is the only DM band I can think of that incorporates elements of post-rock into their sound, does anyone know any similar bands?

Howard the Duck 03-01-2012 06:27 PM

rilly getting into the Gothenberg scene

BastardofYoung 03-02-2012 02:04 AM

Too melodic for my tastes. I do like a couple songs here and there from a few of the bands, but overall the scene is just to on the melodic side of things for me.

always kinda liked this song:

and remember buying this album at one point:

Though saw DT open for Opeth a few years back and don't remember being all that blown away by them. They sounded alright, but boring set.

Are you a fan of The Black Dahlia Murder? They do sort of a modern take on the Gothenburg sound--but not in a poopy metalcore way. Think dueling guitar harmonies...and then more dueling guitar harmonies

You absolutely must get Ritual. It is far and away their magnum opus

i need to d/l that - it's not in the stores here

Miasma I thought was a bit overproduced, and there is a lack of clarity of riffs - too many overlaps

That's my problem with them. They're a phenomenal band, and they destroy live, but on record, they come off just a little too polished.

The Batlord 03-03-2012 09:16 AM

Also, while I'm not a huge fan of brutal death metal, Suffocation needs to be mentioned and I don't think I remember them getting a nod yet, so...

BastardofYoung 03-03-2012 12:21 PM

"Pierced from Within" is one of my favorites in the style. My favorite Death Metal song is "Depths of Depravity". I love the production on that record so much, I have search for albums with a similar feel, but I have yet to find one I can say sounds like that record.

The Batlord 03-05-2012 08:18 AM

Funny, my one problem with Pierced from Within is the production. It sounds too clean to me. Like they were trying to make sure you could here every note. The song writing is just phenomenal though. Brutal death metal is usually just a randomly thrown together series of riffs and blast beats, but that record had some actual class. For me their best was Effigy of the Forgotten. That record is just so unbelievably dense and the vocals are just inhuman.

Mondo Bungle 05-07-2012 07:46 PM

The Karelian Isthmus is among the best metal albums ever recorded.

One of the most epic dm albums I've ever heard.

You really thought is was that great? I thought Tales From The Thousand Lakes as an improvement over it and the classic Elegy to be their finest moment as a band, but I suppose their debut is probably the most straight up death metal they ever put out.

BastardofYoung 05-08-2012 10:59 AM

I like their debut, but wouldn't consider it the best in the style, or even the best in its own scene. Finland had some great bands, like, Adramelech, Depravity, Funebre, Purtenance, Rippikoulu, Demilich, Excrement, and, Demigod... just to name a few.

Travis_Bickle 05-08-2012 12:55 PM

Keeping the Finnish trend going…

As for Amorphis, I think Tales From the Thousand Lakes was their finest hour. And if you want to call that album 'melodic death metal' as some do, it's one of only a small handful of bands labelled this I actually like.

That's not the first time I've heard good things about that album. I might have to check it out.

If any track can reach the heights of these then I am all ears:

You definitely should, I’ve never heard another album anything like it. It has a majestic atmosphere that sucks you right in and is a splendid mixture of death metal, folky melodies (some of them sound like they almost wouldn’t be out of place on a Temnozor album) and even smatterings of doom.

Best of the best hey ... ?
