Call me crazy, but these days I go with Heartwork. It just sounds so unique. Like the absolute perfect version of a death metal band playing heavy metal.

Personally I prefer Necrotism by a hair. But this one is a close second.

This thread is too good to be so far down the list, hell even the power metal thread gets more hits than this;)

The first two Arch Enemy albums are something special with the riffs of the Amott brothers and the vocals of John Liiva. The debut is superb but Stigmata even better, can't believe they got rid of John Liva, but then again they steered into a melo-death direction and his voice was less suited to that.

Not an expert in death metal, but check out Asleigh Stake - Another Fall Alone

They are classified as death metal on websites

The Batlord 10-02-2012 08:28 AM

Have to give a quick shout out to one of my fav bands, Disembowelment. More death/doom than straight up death metal, but whereas most death/doom bands are doom bands with death metal aesthetics, Disembowelment perfectly combine the two without sacrificing either heaviness or brutality. Too bad they only ever released one album, but it's a classic.

Okay. Sold!

Nice to see this thread active again. :)

oof new Gorguts is one of my fav death metal albums of the year. How is it possible that they havent missed a beat in like 12 years since their last album

Mondo Bungle 11-20-2013 04:37 PM

What I've been digging:

Antediluvian
Evil, dissonant death metal music, evil, raw, black metal production. If you're truly kvlt, Through the Cervix of Hawaah is in your collection.
Antediluvian - ...Through The Cervix Of Hawaah [HQ] - YouTube

Disma
Assuming you love Incantation, and you prefer your death metal heavy and crushing as all ****, this band's sole full length, Towards the Megalith, is for you.
Disma - Towards the Megalith (Full Album) - YouTube

Grave Miasma
Like Antediluvian, a sweet band that takes some evil sounding death metal and black metalifies it. Their first full length, Odori Sepulcrorum, came out earlier this year.

Timeghoul
Old school off-kilter death metal, very original. Both of their demos have been compiled together in a discography release.
Timeghoul - Rain Wound - YouTube

Infester
This band plays a style kind of similar to Antediluvian as well, but in a much more old school, much more death metal way. The production is similar, but Infester is much more....filthy and murky sounding.

Snipped the video, but AWESOME album. Underrated jewel of the death/doom genre.

Because Luc Lemay (vocalist) put together a completely different line-up, consisting of musicians that were already active. So it's not really the same Gorguts that was kicking ass in the 90s. But yeah the new album was superb, my favorite track was "An Ocean of Wisdom". That riff is ****ing COLOSSAL!

Rakerwood 12-07-2013 11:41 AM

Don't know if it has been mentioned, but the first Darkthrone album, Soulside journey, is one of my all time favorite death metal albums.. And their album Goatlord, is also pretty deathmetally... After their first album they changed style though..

Soulside Journey is one of my favorite two Darkthrone albums, actually. It's some great death metal. I feel like it doesn't get enough credit because people just think of Darkthrone as a black metal band. "Cromlech" was the first Darkthrone song I heard.

Rakerwood 12-07-2013 06:09 PM

I thought you would have heard it since you have the Ulver cover as avatar..

Danish death metal has been kind of overlooked in the thread aswell, Koldborn is cool... And the Exmortem album called Berzerker Legions is pretty cool. And the first Marduk album, Dark Endless , is way cool.(not danish.. but death metal)

Same here actually. Norwegian black metal isn't my fav genre, and I've always been lukewarm about Darkthrone, but Soulside Journey is pretty sweet. My fav album by them might actually be FOAD. They finally wised up and accepted that 1st wave black metal is superior.

German Death Metal rocks, like.. really

Forward To Death 12-28-2013 11:11 PM

I've been falling in love with prog/tech death metal.

Rjinn 12-29-2013 03:15 AM

^ I'm not much for technical death metal but Revocation are pretty great.

Forward To Death 12-29-2013 07:59 AM

Pretty good, kinda sounds more thrash with the non-growling vocals.

Rjinn 12-29-2013 08:56 AM

Yeah they're more technical death thrash metal.

Forward To Death 12-29-2013 12:09 PM

I was thinking more post-gothic blackened deathcore, myself.

Hey you guys should check out the thread I started a little while ago on Strychnia and leave your thoughts. They're great guys and actually know what they're doing. I posted one of their songs that has John from Dying Fetus doing guest vocals on it. let me know in the thread what you think! I'm curious! :D
