Hmmm.. do not know if I could come up with a definitive best of list. But 12 to try off the bat.

12 doses of death, part 1..

1. Deicide - Legion
2. Immolation - Close to a World Below
3. Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity
4. Cryptopsy - None So Vile
5. Malevolent Creation - Retribution
6. Messiah - Choir of Horrors
7. Rottrevore - Iniquitous
8. Vital Remains - Let Us Pray
9. Accidental Suicide - Deceased
10. Carnage - Dark Recollections
11. Convulse - World Without God
12. Fleshcrawl - Descend Into the Absurd

Has Behemoth been mentioned in this thread at all? Talk about a great band! When I first checked them out they didn't really impress me all that much but over time they just kept growing on me. Now I would definitely say Inferno is one of my absolute favorite metal drummers.

Immolation is freaking amazing. I'd say the pretty much bitch slap ever body else. Legion is very technical, but I kinda find it of too clinical. Cryptopsy is really only good for their first two records. Malevolent and Carnage are two band I've been meaning to get, particularly Carnage since it was Michael Ammots first band (yeah I like Arch Enemy). As far as shredding death metal, I got to throw a bone to Nile. Great drumming which is a must for good death metal, and a guitarist that know how to wring that neck.

Bastards list is great. I fully endorse "Legion" by Deicide - that's an album that is beyond brilliant. Terrific musicianship, great energy - but, best of all, the songs are actually songs - not just a collection of neat sounding moments.

The only thing I'd disagree with is no Incantation & the lack of Demlich. Check out "Nespithe" by Demilich if you want to hear how death metal can be interesting without applique aesthetics from other genres; Incantation, on the other hand, are - in all likelihood - the original black/death band. "Diabolical Conquest" is my favorite Incantation record, but "Onward to Golgotha" is also regarded as brilliant by many.

Was going to post more, they would have made it on another list.

I full endorse the Demilich album. Incantation is also a great band, "Diabolical Conquest" is also my favorite, "Onward to Golgotha" is also an early essential.

Cheers for the extra comments on BOY`s list and will take all this into consideration when giving these albums a twirl, one or two I already know of but will still listen to all again.

Cool list Bastard. Good call on Malevolent Creation. They're the perfect straight up, nothing complicated, just killer death metal band.

Yeah. That album is great. Also features Rob Barrett (Solstice, Cannibal Corpse) on guitar. As well as a guest guitar solo by James Murphy (Death, Cancer, Obituary, Disincarnate). My favorite album by them.
