You'd actually like both Images & Words and Awake if you gave them a chance. Take this song for instance: not too different from what Psychotic Waltz were doing in the early 90's.

Dude, I'm literally listening to Psychotic Waltz right now. Crazy.

Equating Dream Theater and Psychotic Waltz might be the most offensive thing ever written here.

Totally the same thing.

In other words, Dream Theater have more stylistic range on one album than the majority of metal bands out there have in an entire discography? Shocker.

They have a lot in common....just one threw in a sax-y power ballad in 1992 and the other just screams a lot over Watchtower-inspired riffs. Both bands are technical juggernauts.

And I enjoy Watchtower riffs. But most Dream Theater songs either actively suck or they just become unnoticeable background music. You can be as diverse as you wanna be, but it don't mean **** if you're garbage.

Dream Theater’s ‘Images and Words’ Wins Metal Madness 2013

Not saying Dream Theater don't have their fair share of meh material, but c'mon. If Images & Words was really that bad it wouldn't continue to be appreciated by new audiences decades after its release. It stood out from the crowd and balanced the technical wankery with some good hooks and emotional songwriting. Critical opinion on DT's early period is pretty much uniform on these points, one that I'm in agreement with.

Once you get past 1994's Awake you start seeing a much bigger divergence of opinion in what constituted a good album from DT or not. Scenes From A Memory Pt. 2 was pretty polarizing (critical darling conceptually, songwriting not so much), and while you like Train Of Thought it's definitely a mixed bag. Neither album stood out the way I&W or Awake did in the early 90's, plus LaBrie's voice got ****ed up around '95 which he still hasn't completely recovered from.

Oh well. Let us move onward to new metal masturbation horizons!

Nah, quality really has no bearing on that kind of thing.

OMG that's disgusting and degrading. Or it would be if I gave a **** about "March Metal Madness" or whatever the ****. There's DT that I actually like, and I've tried to like Images and Words, but it's just one of the most ill-conceived, tedious, and pointless albums ever. I can't even hate it because it's just so dull. It'll have flashes of something that's alright or something, and then just transition into the most cringey, annoying bull**** the next.

^ Lol whatever mang. I've heard enough cringey "me too" death metal in this thread to last me a century or two, but every once in awhile I see a glimmer of hope on the horizon.
