My favourite Cathedral album is probably Caravan Beyond Redemption. It's less doomy, so people like it less, but I just think it's got some really catchy songs and it just sounds really good and groovy.

Captain Clegg is one of my favourite tracks off the album

I hear it has an uncensored version of "These Boots" which is cool. I have the first remaster where half of it is hilariously bleeped out and it's chucked all the way to the back of the album. Does the new one have that pointless intro to "The Mechanix"?

The Final Kill includes a demo version of 'Mechanix' that doesn't have the intro, though its not a whole lot shorter overall or anything.

The intro isn't the worst thing ever but it's dirty ass speed metal. It doesn't need an intro.

A good album? Uh... yeah. A smart song? Uh... yeah. Does it still kinda rule? Uh... yeah it kinda does. It also helps that this was like the second Megadeth song I ever heard back when it was still on the radio and I didn't even know what thrash metal was.

I think it's a good song. The chorus is slightly derpy (that robot voice in the background is the main source of derp), but otherwise I can't complain. I like most of the songs better than this one. Seems to me there's always a certain point after which most people just dislike any band's output for no particular reason (usually after the first 5 or so albums). I think this album is solid if it actually gets a fair chance like the early albums do. Same take I'd have on tonnes of other bands.

I just think that after Youthanasia Dave started running out of good song ideas and could only put together a handful of truly solid songs and then surround them with decent ones or just filler. I'm fine with his stylistic changes up until he cynically started trying to court his old fanbase. The last time he came close to a legitimately great album was Risk. Even Cryptic Writings has too much filler.

I think that's just because it's common for artists to overstay their welcome by phoning it in for cash or to finish out a contract. If I were to judge TWNAH like I do their early material, I'd say they should stop trying to be a pop group.

The Batlord 09-11-2018 09:18 AM

They should also stop trying to be a thrash group. I say Dave should chuck all the expectations out the window and just try to make one album he actually gives a **** about and if that fails let's end the farce and he can become a producer or something. They really did have success as a pop group though. They just weren't particularly consistent.

Super Collider feels like an album Dave cared about to me. It's full of musical references to bands that inspired him, like Kiss and Thin Lizzy. People hated it, so Dave made Dystopia next, which was ostensibly an attempt to give people what they want.
