What Are You listening To V.III Metal!

We have a thread in general music regarding what track/band/album you are listening to but Metal is not to everyone's taste and I find if you post a band in that genre it can be overlooked so I want to make this a dedicated thread for Metal as I still love to devour new or undiscovered music and give it the exposure it needs within it's own niche.

This is from 2008 and although nothing special I really like the mash up of subgenres on this album that incorporate Death, Groove, Melodic and Traditional sounds:

That Revocation track was really kewl. I will be checking them out more. :thumb:

Do nu metal/alternative metal and industrial metal count?

hip hop bunny hop 10-10-2011 12:09 AM

**** metal bands who focus on technical wankery.

Metal Connoisseur 10-10-2011 02:54 PM

Progressive deathcore ish. I quite like it.

Yeah any genre of Metal is fine by me.

Anthrax back on track with their new album. Does what it says on the tin. The track In The End is better but can't find it!

If this does, then anything should count.

Dude, I don't get why Samael don't get more credit. Amazing.

Alright, last album aside, Morbid Angel are just the best death metal band ever. No other DM band sounds as dark and malevolent.

I've been getting into 70's style doom and goth rock this past month or so. These guys fit the bill. Got that Sabbath/Cheer sound going on.

Evile are one of those old school Thrash bands that still sound fresh enough to listen to now even if they are far from original. The album Enter The Grave is fantastic from start to finish. Makes me feel like I was 17 again!

Engine 10-14-2011 07:45 PM

I'm not a huge fan of this 'supergroup' The Ocean, but the 1st track on their Aeolian album always touches my heart.

As long as you could handle Sean Killian's vocals then this track is essential old school Thrash especially the tracks second half.

God, this band is kicking my ass at the moment. Death/thrash that uses keyboards for some kick ass futuristic atmosphere. Actually that pretty much sounds like Fear Factory. Of course this band came before Fear Factory, and they sound better. So... Fear Factory = pwned.

Anyway, I dig some Fear Factory releases so I suppose that it's going to be worth my time to check them out ;)

I just got the newest Kylesa this week and I can't stop listening to it!

The Batlord 10-20-2011 10:11 AM

We. Need. A headbanging icon. So. ****ing. Badly. God, this is just one of the best death metal bands of modern times. I just listened to Vital Remains for the first time a little while ago, and now I'm chillin' with some Bloodbath. DM nirvana.

hip hop bunny hop 10-21-2011 02:19 AM

^^^ ugh. Just say no to people who play make pretend pretentious metal....

....because raw, street metal is where it's at. Hear that ****ing melody??!?!? That riff is anything but epic, but this song is catchy as ****.

Extreme metal is at it's best when the makers acknowledge the genres punk roots; **** guitar wankery, triggered drums, and pro-tools - street metal is about expression of anything but technical ability when it's at it's best.

EDIT:

Ya, I realize Bloodbath is not elitist music, but the ****ers who comprise the band (at least, the original lineup) were primarily of the faux-pretentious metal genre.

I'm not the biggest Opeth fan in the world, but I definitely dig Katatonia. So I don't know what you're smoking. I love ugly, skuzzy metal as much as the next guy, but I see no reason why metal should have to be restricted.

Slough Feg - Warrior's Dawn

Not really original at all. Like Iron Maiden with stoner riffs. But it's just so good that I couldn't possibly care less.

almauro 11-01-2011 08:07 PM

I usually don't listen to a lot of slow depressive metal, but this has a lot of blast beats and some pretty cool atmosphere.

hip hop bunny hop 11-01-2011 08:45 PM

Kvelertak are ****. I don't understand why everyone went ape over this band; the death 'n roll bits are fun, but they run into the same problem that has plagued the entire metalcore genre - the songs lack continuity. They bounce from black metal to rock and back with no rhyme or reason. Compounding this is the "black metal' parts are just... godawful.

This song by Carpathian Forest is int he same vein of Kvelertak, but isn't aggravatingly random.

Interesting you brought them up. Today I watched 'Trollhunter' and this song (Mjod) by them popped up during the end credits. I hadn't really heard anything like it before. I liked the song well enough while I was watching credits roll but I'm not sure how I feel about this band. I don't care much about the lack of continuity but I'm leaning toward your opinion that they're not very good.

They're good because they rule. Simple as that. You claim that they change sounds without rhyme or reason, but that's what is so engaging about them. You don't know what's coming next. It's like when a married couple have been having sex the same way for twenty years and it's ****ing boring now, but then the husband does something he's never done before and it's like, "Hello!" It also doesn't hurt that they do so seamlessly in a non-Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum kinda way that just works perfectly.

I've been looking for some non-gothy death doom, and this suits the bill pretty nicely.

Darkthrone - These Shores Are Damned

I like this far more than I like Darkthrone's earlier work. Black metal that's actually fun to listen to. Blasphemously delicious.

hip hop bunny hop 11-02-2011 04:56 PM

Batlord, good for you if you like it, but I've no interest in bands who strengths are novelty and randomness.

Ildjarn - Strength & Anger (#14)

^^^ probably my favorite Norwegian black metal band at the moment.

almauro 11-02-2011 08:39 PM

Darkthrone kicks major booty. I'm not so sure about Ildjarn:(. The origin of all black metal Norwegian, is contained in this sh/tty sounding 15 second intro.

Ugh, no. Early Darkthrone for me.

I don't see your point about Venom - there isn't really any music in the first 15 seconds of the song you posted.
Incidentally, I really like that Ildjarn song.

Are you serious? That's Venom playing with all the bass muted, which in turn inspired Quorthon on Bathory's debut to create tinny sounding purposely lo-fi epics like this...

...and the rest is history.
