Definitely, and I think Strange Highways shows that Dio wasn't finished with that sound that Sabbath had on Dehumanizer. Strange Highways could've easily been the next Sabbath album and would sound right at home.

My two theories are that either Dio didn't have any ideas for his next record so he swiped Dehumanizer's sound, or Dio wanted to go RLY heavy and Tony Iommi was like "But we don't do that anymore" and Dio was like "Shut up ***got" and got so wound up he recorded another album just like it.

I think this is most likely. If he was out of ideas and just took the sound of Dehumanizer, Strange Highways would've probably sounded a lot more uninspired. Strange Highways is anything but. Probably my favorite Dio album tbh.

This is a TERRIBLE take

Metal is chock full of new bands and artists making unique, memorable, forward thinking music.

I've spent no small amount of time looking for good bands over the years. I used to think of myself as a fan of metal first and foremost. I sort of ended up realizing I was getting tired of most metal and these days it's incredibly hard for me to find any bands that I can care about at all.

In other genres, it's downright easy. So I think I'm just more or less done with metal, aside from the odd exception. I do still love several bands and sometimes even look for new stuff. I just almost never find anything worth my while.

So, me thinking most metal is boring and samey has some personal context.

Metal bands need to return to the songs about how awesome metal is.

I would love to see a heavy metal band come around that uses jazz elements or something but sings about how badass they are for being a metal band. Now that would be unique, memorable, and awesome.

"Metallic fists, crushing the sky
Awesome power, heavy metal music bringing the noise
Join us in the banging of the heads"

*jazzy saxophone solo*

That almost mirrors my experience with and thoughts of metal as well. Like, to a T. Maybe I just burnt myself out too early on. Metal was all I listened to for a good 2 years during my early teens and subsequent to that most of it (especially newer stuff) just hasn't held the same charm for me.

Between 2009 and 2011 especially, I spent a lot of time looking for metal, buying metal albums, listening to metal albums, and all the time, there was this nagging, growing feeling in the back of my mind that it wasn't really what I was supposed to be doing anymore. Then I slowly realized I needed to branch out and I honestly feel more excited about music now than ever.

I've never bought as many albums in one year as I did in 2018. I was drowning in awesome music and only a handful albums were metal.

I still love many metal albums, but it's really, really, reeeeallyyyy hard for me to find new artists that impress me.

I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that most of the metal posted on this board is basically not good

When I find the time I’ll drop some links to some wild, experimental, unique metal to prove y’all wrong

tbh I don't go in this thread enough to see your cool experimental stuff, Blaro, but I'm still up to hearing it.
