After careful consideration I have decided that Bolt Thrower are still the best death metal band.

If there's one thrash metal band I'd say are unequivocally the most underrated it is easily Anacrusis. Full stop. From album one they showed real brutality but also mature songwriting that doesn't detract from their impact and even well realized hooks as a garnish on their brilliance. But for some god damn reason nobody but the most nerdy thrash obsessives talk about them even though they have at least two albums that are 10/10 classics that can go up against the best bands in the genre. Anacrusis are simply jaw-droppingly good. At least for a while their website even put their discography up for download for free.

I just listen to a bit of this. I like everything about it except the vocals.

I ****ing love the vocals. They allow the music to flow seamlessly between death thrash and progressive thrash.

Been on a big early 70s proto-metal/heavy rock kick today. Currently blasting Leaf Hound's Growers of Mushroom.

May be an unpopular opinion but I think heavy metal was at its best when it was a bunch of stoners fuzzing it up in some dude's garage in 1971.

Growers of Mushroom is such a great album. (and I've been saying it for like 15 years)

Currently listening to The Shrine of Mad Laughter by Deathspell Omega (and the rest of the album ofc)

Now that you mention it, I'm certain I actually discovered that album from reading your 1001 thread back in the day!

And to keep on topic, I'm continuing my psychedelic proto-metal kick with Hawkwind's Master of the Universe.

Possibly a hot take but Bolt Thrower's best album might be Mercenary. Since The IVth Crusade they had been refining their method of welding catchy, hype-as-**** riffs and melodic flourishes to their rumbling , grinding, tank assault rhythm section and Mercenary is them at the absolute height of their powers of making the absolute most fun death metal look easy with brilliant songwriting. I just can't get enough of this album. I swear to god you can dance to this thing.

It's understandably not as talked about as Reign in Blood, but Hell Awaits should be ranked as one of the classic 80s metal albums. Nothing like Slayer in the morning to get me pumped for the work shift.
