I would consider metallica to be mainstream, old and definitely new. More people are gonna know about/heard of metallica than they would hear about, um, say, Venom (this is just a random pick, stay with me).

They were considered mainstream after 88 with the ONE video, but before that? Although metal fans knew EXACTLY who they were, they were not mainstream at all except to metal fans, so it all depends on your definition of Mainstream!

I consider a band mainstream when they begin getting media exposure (with the exception of the internet) outside their local area. From just having your song being played on the radio to touring on Ozzfest to having a video on MTV.
