It's a great album. Kind of reminiscent of Foetus' more rock-ish songs. It's funny to see it pop up here since I've recently been kind of rediscovering it after not having listened to it for a while.

Since I could only pick one I went with Alice in Chains since they're godly, but Stone Temple Pilots are also up there in my favorite grunge bands.

Yes STP was grunge during that era in the early years. Just because they were from California other than Seattle doesn't mean they weren't classified as grunge.

Grunge is more reflective of punk and metal. Think Mudhoney or Tad. "Touch Me, I'm Sick" is the definitive Grunge sound. I think most people just think of that era, and lump anything with a soft/loud/soft/loud sound as being grunge.

STP to me are more just a hard rock band, not a grunge band.

I agree with most of what you say here mate, and the heavy Iggy Pop influence can be seen on Mudhoney, the metal influences on Soundgarden etc, but 1970s hard rock was equally important to grunge and that is really evident on Pearl Jam and STP, Nirvana more or less combined a bit of all of the above.

I liken the evolution of grunge to that of Brit-pop, as both derived from a set of earlier classic influences:

Grunge- punk, metal and 1970s hard rock (especially Zeppelin)
Brit Pop- 1960s bands like the Beatles, the Kinks and Bowie

I make the comparison between the grunge and bit pop genres as all the bands that made up the genres had a load of things in common, but also sounded very different. I mean none of the main grunge bands sounded the same but they were all instantly recognizeable as being grunge.

I've always seen grunge as a vague marketing term for vaguely related "alternative" rock music from the early to mid 90s.
