i wasn't denying pearl jam were a grunge band. what i meant to express is that grunge/seattle sound is not a genre. the bands sounded often nothing alike. These aren't the four big bands of a genre- They're the 4 big bands of a movement.

Its good to debate each individuals concept of the history of music, that is what a music forum is meant for. But so many times people contradict themselves. For example: You state 1st, that pearl jam is classical orientated. Then you state, not denying they were grunge, etc. And to say that the 5 major bands often sound nothing alike? When they all applied the same chord patterns, lyrics, etc. Twisting & adding a little poetry to ones post does not make it a fact, Only a personal opinion. I think we are splitting hairs here, I can suggest the fact that 90s/grunge could be influenced by blues, jazz, gospel, and so on. And the music industry has its own terms of classifications. And even then, it can change day by day. I agree to an extent the indie sound has been around even before the term 'Indie' was conceived. I just believe there are to many terms to different styles as it is. let alone personal classifications. The most convenial way of doing/applying things is so often dismissed. I guess I am old school, Music is music within its individual styles, etc. I have enjoyed this debate, and look forward to more. Peace.
