Of course maybe if he wasnt wearing a mask and Kentucky fried chicken box on his head you could see more emotion. Not saying he's not a talented guitarist, just nothing about his playing that sets him apart from the rest that I've heard. Also his sound to me is..to clean..for lack of a better term. Typically I tend to like the rawer more edgy sound a Fender Strat or Tele pelt out. Again I'll give it some time and see if I can come around some more.
His music is insanely diverse. I don't know what you're listening to, but don't listen to the Monsters and Robots type stuff and assume that's all he has. (Don't get me wrong, MaR is a good album, but it's far from his best work and gives people the wrong idea.) I've heard ten of his albums, and I'd suggest the Electric Tears album, in particular the title track or the Miles Davis cover, "Sketches of Spain," to start out with. Easily my favorite aside from maybe Kaleidoscalp, which is some of his most experimental/inaccessible work and definately not something I'd play to someone new to Buckethead. Granted, plenty of stuff from that album has already been posted...

Also, a couple really awesome tracks off of the more recent sequal to that album (Electric Sea.) That one's on here too, but not (in my opinion), the best tracks.

@Big,
Strongly disagree. Even his shredding manages to have emotion, IMO.

I would recommend "population override", being the blues fan that you are, I think you'll like it. It's one his most bluesy albums, probably the most. You're also going to hear the sickest guitar/keyboard dueling.

I would also check out "Colma". It's a very mellow acoustic album.

Somehow, even being the Bucket fan I am, I havn't heard those in their entirety even though I love what I've heard from them. Thanks for dropping the reminder.

A good reflection of what others have contrasted... Buckethead is a great technical guitarist. His work with Praxis is even more experimental sounding. But that's his thing - playing with technique, etc. In my opinion, you're not going to hear the soul of a Hendrix or Stevie Ray.

Check out the song "aunt Suzie", very emotional playing if you ask me. I would also check out the album Decoding the Tomb of Bansheboot, one of my favorite BH albums. Absolutely stellar guitar work.

If this doesn't have soul/emotion, then someone tore my heart out:

Buckethead watching the boats with my dad - YouTube

It doesn't have to have soaring notes, or have a blues based lick in order for it be emotional and have some soul to it. ^^That is pure emotion, especially at 1:30 and at around 4:00. I tear up everytime I listen to it.

Oh yes, one of the albums I recommended. Colma is full of beautiful acoustic work.

Here's one of my favorites from Decoding the Tomb...

To those refuting,

I think theres a difference between soul and what buckethead plays. I feel like he can hit "Maggotbrain" emotion, but I wouldn't call that soul. Emotions are one thing; I feel like sadness is a passive emotion. But to play with what I would call passion requires an active willingness to want to feel while playing.

I don't think Buckethead can remove himself from his training. I feel like his playing is mathematical. There isn't anything wrong with that, but I wouldn't call it "soul."

I hear what you're saying. He can Use his knowledge to create beautiful music. He's really just a master. He can do anything with a guitar. Whether or not any of it has "soul", that's very debatable.

Who does have soul, big3?
