Whether or not one self-describes as normal seems irrelevant; normalcy is a trait is projected onto others.

But, anyways, whether or not the lyrics are explicitly anti-social is irrelevant as the music style itself has been, since its inception, anti-social and the sound chosen because it was antagonistic. For this to change we would need, at minimum, for the aesthetic principles of the black metal sound to be considered acceptable by a large portion of society.

This is why "traditional" black metal artists and fans mock those who try to incorporate into the genre populist messages, especially those with a political dimension. Whether explicitly far-left (e.g., Iskra) or far-right (e.g., Wehrhammer), neither side has yet to be able to square the anti-populist nature of the music with their populist rhetoric. A broader way to state this would be that black metal's aesthetic is fundamentally anti-humanistic.

Right, here's two things that make the crew of Wolves in the Throne Room bizarre:

-the guys are self described eco-feminists
-they actually use draft horses for farm work

Boom. ****ing weird.

I don't know what in the hell they mean by eco-feminists, unless it really is exactly as it sounds (why would it be paired together?), and the fact that they use horses is kinda neat. It's almost like they became Amish. It's outlandish and I don't know what made them do it, but it just seems like they weren't satisfied with how they were living. So they started over, in a way. For me, weird is someone like Dead.

Coldworld is ambient black metal with no politics and the one man band looks totally normal. Maybe "normal" means somebody could look like that and get a job as a CEO, lol.
Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives - ColdWorld

This is a sample of his music.

I think its normal if a band wants to look like their music since thats how they feel. Coldworld has a new album dropping soon. I read about it on his Myspace page.

I think the best luck you're going to have is the, for lack of a better term, "blackgaze" stuff currently coming out of France. It's essentially as it sounds, shoegazey riffs combined with the atmospheric elements of black metal and the occasional vocal shrieks commonly associated with the genre.

I like it too. I'm not even some new age "hippie" type, or even particularly liberal, but I've always loved the idea of ditching society to go live on a commune or something like that. Modern society has it's good attributes, but it's too isolating to ever really fulfill me in the way that I think it does some people.

Seems to me like some of the best Black Metal coming out these days are from the guys who aren't taking so much time to worry about their makeup before their show. I've also come to notice that the corpse paint has become more of a practice for the Black Metal bands that still lean toward the symphonic side of the spectrum. I would have to say that Wolves in the Throne Room are probably my favorite Black Metal that I've been listening to lately.

I didn't know concept albums about lycanthropy and trolls and other Scandinavian folk imagery were parts of everyday normal discussion.

Can I just change the title to "Black Metal Bands That Don't Wear Corpse Paint"?
