Although it may be cliche to say, it's useful knowledge that McCartney said that he wrote "Helter Skelter" to try and achieve the title of writing the "grittiest song ever", of the time, of course. He and Lennon allegedly got into an argument over this, as Paul didn't think to/want to include John on the project. And, I haven't heard all the songs in the world, therefore couldn't tell ya the most intense one. Infact, I don't even think it exists (how could it, when it's all subjective, y'know? That's what musiclovin's about.). Though, again, cliche, but I would say Helter Skelter is very intense. I also like Dana Fuch's version of it - her gritty voice seems to, whilst over-achieve, certainly, but her gritty voice seems to suit the trying-grit of the song perfectly. That being said, and spinning back the clock even more, I like John Lee Hooker's version of Roadhouse Blues - it's gritty, the sound of the thing, I mean, the lyrics lack but that can go either way with music y'know?... I would mention some Sex Pistols or Nirvana, but that's just TOO cliche on a list like this. I wouldn't listen to me though, I think Freebird's intense because it makes me cry ha.

The Poet and the Pendulum, by Nightwish. It goes insane in the middle and has the single greatest fiddle solo i have ever heard. Also, Chasing the Dragon by Epica is pretty intense IMO.

I'll have to disagree on the greatest fiddle solo. Try listening to Alabama-Mountain Music. (and I think you mean violin, not fiddle)

My most intense song choice is Dragonforce-Soldiers of the wastelands, it's like 9 minutes and 45 seconds of pure hammer-ons.

Dragonforce is a pile of trite, overengineered technical rubbish. They make so many mistakes in live performances and their recordings are devoid of any emotion whatsoever. They're just a hook to draw little kids into listening to metal (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there are so many better quality metal bands).

Listen to Angel Witch, Diamond Head, or Tank if you want to hear technical expertise and GOOD songwriting.

Yeah, well, I could care less about their live performances. But I really enjoy how they experiment with different guitar riffs.

Dragonforce songs sound to similar to me for me to like them, and good song isn't all about speed. Also, I agree with lucifer sam.

If a rock band don't sound good live then they have lost half the battle. A rock band's forte is being the business live.
